This year the staff went on a fieldtrip to Kitsap County to tour an art museum and two library branches Kitsap Regional Library. Bainbridge Island Museum of Art offered a private tour of the museum and highlighted artists from Port Townsend and Jefferson County in the tour. The staff toured the Bainbridge Island Library branch and got a sneak peak of the newly renovated library before its grand opening. Staff enjoyed boxes lunches from Town & Country in the updated meeting room and in the beautiful maintained library gardens. Finally, the staff toured the newest library branch in our region: Kingston Library branch of Kitsap Regional Library. Then the training specialist for Kitsap Regional Library offered an engaging and very useful training on emotional intelligence in the workplace. The weather was outstanding and it was a wonderful day to explore, connect, and be inspired. Here are a couple of the comments from staff from their evaluations of the day: “All of the visits were excellent! I am grateful for the whole experience. Lucretia (the trainer) was awesome and helpful. I feel more connected to the library-world of our region.” “Thanks Melody for a great day away. Really enjoyed the whole day.” “I enjoyed the whole day. I especially like Lucretia’s presentation. She was a captivating speaker and the subject was interesting.” “The tour guides/hosts and lecturer were all very friendly, warm and knowledgeable.” “Thank you for a wonderful staff day.” Photos of the day: City of Port Townsend Monthly Library Program Report September 2017 2017 Photos from All Staff Day 2017 Program name: Changeling Shakespeare Reading Group Date: 2nd and 4th Tuesdays Presenter: Bob DeWeese Program’s intended age group: Kids, teens, adults, all ages/family Adults Attendance: 20 Location: Pink House Sponsored by: Friends, other: please specify Friends Description CHANGELING will meet twice monthly to read and discuss the plays of William Shakespeare. City of Port Townsend Monthly Library Program Report September 2017 2017 Program name: Book Lover’s Café: Circling the Sun Date: 1st Monday (moved to Tuesday due to the holiday) Presenter: Melody E. Program’s intended age group Adults Attendance: 9 Location: Pink House Sponsored by: Friends, other: please specify Friends- $100- memorial bookclub kit in honor of Sue Estes from the Bookies Book Club Description Paula McLain, author of the phenomenal bestseller The Paris Wife, now returns with her keenly anticipated new novel, transporting readers to colonial Kenya in the 1920s. Circling the Sun brings to life a fearless and captivating woman—Beryl Markham, a record-setting aviator caught up in a passionate love triangle with safari hunter Denys Finch Hatton and Karen Blixen, who as Isak Dinesen wrote the classic memoir Out of Africa. Beryl forges her own path as a horse trainer, and her uncommon style attracts the eye of the Happy Valley set, a decadent, bohemian community of European expats who also live and love by their own set of rules. But it’s the ruggedly charismatic Denys Finch Hatton who ultimately helps Beryl navigate the uncharted territory of her own heart. The intensity of their love reveals Beryl’s truest self and her fate: to fly. Set against the majestic landscape of early-twentieth-century Africa, McLain’s powerful tale reveals the extraordinary adventures of a woman before her time, the exhilaration of freedom and its cost, and the tenacity of the human spirit. Comments/Press Coverage The book club spent two months reading about this remarkable woman, and will watch Out of Africa after the October meeting.
