Summer Reading 2016- Final Numbers
The Youth Services team planned a wonderful summer reading program for all ages with the
brilliant themes of Greek mythology, the Olympics, and health. The Library set the aspirational
goal of 10,000 hours to be read by library patrons hoping to inspire people of all ages to read
for pleasure this summer. Kids and teens earned a book to keep when they read for 10 hours,
they got a beautiful shirt designed by local artist Jesse Joshua Watson when they read 50 hours,
and adults earned a shirt for reading 100 hours. The percentage of people who signed up for
summer reading versus people who reported reading at least 10 hours is very encouraging in
terms of national averages and gives us a baseline for how to encourage more patrons to
participate in the program and complete at least 10 hours of reading for 2017. We are all very
proud of how successful summer reading has been for 2016 and give a huge THANK YOU to the
Friends of the Library for making this program possible through their generous sponsorship and
support. How about a reading goal of 15,000 hours for 2017…!

Description
When Betty MacDonald married a marine and moved to a
small chicken farm on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington
State, she was largely unprepared for the rigors of life in the
wild. With no running water, no electricity, a house in need of
constant repair, and days that ran from four in the morning to
nine at night, the MacDonalds had barely a moment to put
their feet up and relax. And then came the children. Yet
through every trial and pitfall—through chaos and
catastrophe—this indomitable family somehow, mercifully,
never lost its sense of humor.
A beloved literary treasure for more than half a century, Betty
MacDonald's The Egg and I is a heartwarming and uproarious
account of adventure and survival on an American frontier
Comments/Press Coverage This month Melody tried something new and served a couple
of refreshments to the bookclub inspired by the “Egg and I”
including deviled eggs and cream puffs. The club really
appreciated rereading or reading this book for the first time as
it is a wonderful local classic.

Description
Roots and Branches is the semi-autobiographical story of Eva
Szabo, who grew up the youngest of three children in a middle
class Jewish family, just like many others. But since the Nazi
occupation of Budapest, Hungary, seventeen-year-old Eva’s
world has been turned upside down.
Now her best friend has left for Switzerland, her brother Paul
is making waves in the resistance movement, and her older
sister is forced to abandon a promising musical career. In the
face of all this upheaval, Eva feels she has no outlet to express
her true emotions—which, as local bombings intensify, are
growing more tumultuous by the day.
Determined to protect his younger sister from the ravages of
war, Paul secures a job for Eva in the rural countryside, caring
for the children of his friend Zoltan. As she leaves behind the
only home she has ever known, Eva faces new challenges and
finds new purpose in her life—as she discovers important
lessons about love, empathy, and understanding.
Based on actual events, this semi-autobiographical work of

Description In July of 2015 Mike McAndrew, a retired photojournalist who has
lived in Port Townsend since 2007, began a project photographing
people of Port Townsend. Nearly a year later the project was
completed having included 106 people. Mr. McAndrew talked about
the process of making this book and acknowledged those who helped
in the project. A Q&A followed.
A slide show was shown of all who posed for the book.
Mike said, “I wanted to create a historic document of some of the
faces of Port Townsend that depicted the richness and diversity of this
place. Many of us came to this area for its raw beauty but we stay
because of her people.”
