Title: Parks, Recreation, and Community Services - New Department, and Director Alex
Wisniewski
City Manager David Timmons announced today that Parks, Recreation, and Community
Services will become its own department within the City, and Alex Wisniewski will be promoted
from Division Head to Department Head as part of this move. This change comes as part of key
improvements the City is beginning to plan over the next year in order to maintain long-term
funding and service levels for Port Townsend parks, the library, and city streets maintenance.
The City recognizes that Parks, Recreation, and Community Services are a high priority and
core function of the City. Until now, it was a division within Public Works. Public Works can now
focus more attention on utilities and maintaining city streets, and Parks, Recreation, and
Community Services will have more support and priority within the City.
Alex Wisniewski led the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Division for two and a half
years, and has shown an outstanding commitment to the City and Port Townsend community
and has earned the respect of his co-workers and residents alike.
“Alex has demonstrated on many occasions an ability to accept his challenges and prepare and
present very professional and comprehensive solutions to the benefit of the community. Port
Townsend is in a much better place than it was just a short time ago due to Alex’s efforts. I am
very excited to see this opportunity being presented to him now. Alex can accomplish great
things for us,” said David Timmons.
During his time with the City, he successfully led an effort to increase the investment in the
City’s staff and facilities, including parks, the pool, and Mountain View Commons, and is eager
to extend his abilities to begin facilitating improvements to the many city trails and future parks.
“I am humbled, honored, and very excited to be tasked with leading this brand-new department.
I have only been with the City for a short period of time but have quickly grown attached to the
Port Townsend community and peers I work with daily. My career has been steeped in work
focused on providing safe and accessible parks, open space, recreation programs, and other
public services and I am looking forward to using this experience to build and advance a healthy
Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department to sustainably meet the needs of the
Port Townsend community,” said Alex Wisniewski.
