HomeMy WebLinkAbout083073MINUTES - Library Board Meeting 8/30/73 Librarian - Mrs. Wallin Present - Kilham, Yearian, Barnhart Absent - Harms, Crist Guest - Charles Wallin Because of a lack of secretary, there were no minutes of the previous meeting. Librarian's Report Mrs. Wallin has checked with the city attorney and finds that the library board must call for bids on work exceeding $2500. Roger french has drawn tentative plans or specifications for the library rear entry. The funds from revenue sharing allocated by the Council to the library ($3,000) are not presently available sd we cannot call for bads yet. Mrs. Wallin has been unable to get a commitment from Timmerman on the shelving we wish to purchase. There was a loss of petty cash (approx. $50), $5 of the library's and $14 of miss Baumeister's, concurrent with the employment of a young aid. Circumstantial evidence indicates the aid,who has been terminated. Vouchers were surveyed and signed by the board. Under "old business" Kilham reported that the adjacent property belonging to Alaska Telephone can be purchased by the library at cost with the stipulation that it (1) be used for library purposes (2) Alaska Telephone be given the option to repurchase at the same price if it becomes surplus to the library. Kilham was instructed to approach the city governing body about financial feasability. New Business The Community Library Council meeting in Anacortes 9/$/73 was announced and Kilham offered rides to anyone wishing to attend. The consideration of the Library Trustee's checklist was again postponed for two reasons - -board members absent and lack of time. As the result of an incident occurring in conjunction with the Friends of the Library book sale at the Jefferson County Fair as related by Kilham, the librarian and the board members present were asked to consider how to develop better relations between the Friends group and the librarian -- whether or not the library should dis- pose of surplus books and how - -and whether it would be advisable to ask the State Library Development Section for help in weeding the collection. In the resulting discussion, firs. Wallin contended that (1) there is an element in the Friends group which wishes to tell her how to run' :the library (2) the library collection is in the process of being weeded by her (3) she lacks time to do it better and faster (4) she has no intention of accepting help from the state library in weeding (5) the proposal to give surplus books to the Jefferson Neighborhood Center is an effort am move us toward regional libraries (6) Kilham's term is expired and therefore he has no authority (7) Kilham and the Friends have conspired against the best interests of the library and its users. The meeting was adjourned. These minutes were written by Pir rin the absence of the secretary. go
