HomeMy WebLinkAbout032973The Port Townsend Library Board met on Thursday, March 29, at 4 p.m. Present
were Barnhart, Crist, Harms, Kilham and Wallin, plus a Friends of the Library
representative, Mrs. Harrison.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved after a correction
by Mrs. Wallin to the effect that she had called attention to there being only
four members present when the election of officers was held in February.
Mrs. Wallin reported that Mr. Boland had just replaced two mirrors in the
showcase. Vouchers for the past month were signed, with the exception of the phone
bill which has not yet arrived. Also, Roger French has been making a new up -to -date
mosaic of Port Townsend and there will be a bill for that.
A new copy machine had been demonstrated by 3M, cost $995, plus a table, $83,
plus cost of supplies, $98, plus sales tax. Considerable discussion followed in
regard to whether this copy machine should be a top priority item in view of the
considerable expense involved. If purchased on contract, the interest cost would
be high, and perhaps it would be better to wait until the end of the year to see
what funds are left over so that more could be paid in a lump sum. There are a
number of people who have grown used to using the copier at the Library. However,
the City Hall has one that Mrs. Wallin can use for Library purposes. Mr. Kilham re-
marked that there was also the matter of time consumed by the staff in assisting
the public in operating the copier that must be taken into consideration when
figuring costs.
Mr. Barnhart suggested that a slide projector or a micro -film reader might be
a better way to use the money. Mrs Crist asked if we couldn't consider using the
extra money for the new back entrance, planned so that older people of the community
wouldn't have to travel up the long flight of stairs. Mr. Kilham replied that
Federal Revenue Sharing Funds can be obtained to finance the addition to the building
and to construct a parking space at the back. But he thinks shelving is the most
important need at the moment. Mr. Barnhart asked if it was possible to have a coin -
operated copier such as the U of W has. Mrs. Wallin will look into other brands and
types of copiers --- really explore the field before we actually make a decision.
The City Council has okayed sick leave and vacation benefits for part -time
library help, Mrs. Wallin reported. Also that
Pars. Harrison is chairman for National Library Week and the Open House to be
held on Thursday, April 12. We asked a number of the organizations in town to help
with displays. Dorothy Jean Ray is to be the author on hand - -and she will also have
a display. We have 350 new books which will be ready for display. In the small
.board room, a short film "How a Bill becomes a Law - -the Art of Compromise" will be
showing. Possibly the high school might have a group of students who would appear
on a panel to discuss this topic. The little room will be painted by Peggy Cook
and the carpet will be laid ready for the open House. Mrs. Wallin also asked if
she might put a paid ad in the Leader for the Open House. Special invitations will
be sent to the Councilmen and Mayor. Friends of the Library will ast as hostesses.
In closing, Mr. Kilham announced that anyone who wished to attend the Library
Conference at Ocean Shores, May 11 and 12, may ride with him. Mr. Barnhart moved
that we adjourn.
