HomeMy WebLinkAbout120164December 1 The Library Board meeting came to order at 1;10. Board members � pr?sant were; Mr. Wits, Dr. Chuljian, Mr. Potthoff, Miss Rutledge, and Sallie H311. Also pr--sent were three reprosentatives of the A,A. U.W.,Mrs, Goehring, Miss Campbell, and Mrs. Skov. In the absence of Mrs. Hunt, Sallie Hill took the minutes. Miss Rutledge submitted her report and spoke on several matters; 1. She noted that the lib_ -r -,°r circulation had declined slightly, for which cirdumstance she had no ex�:lana- tion. 2. She commented on the service given by those persons who are now employed as assistants in the library. She said that she found Mrs. Poulsen particularly apt and that she had increased Mrs. Poulson's compensa- tion to $1;50 and hour. Miss Baumeister, she said, is a careful worker, but she is somewhat handicapped by.language.:difficulty. Karen Bower is ambitious and a good worker, but she neads direction. Miss Rutledge latbrr indicated that Miss Baumeister and Karen Bower would be employed during the period wh�:n the library will be closed to the public. 3. Miss Rutledge reported that she had purchased the most recent edition of the Current Biography and that the edition immediately preceding it evidently was not pur- chased. 4. Miss Rutledge asked for-peritission to move a cabinet now in the work area on the main .Floor to the Board Y Room, where it will be used for storing; supplies. 5. She recommended that public announcement be made that the library is to be closed to the public from Decem- ber 21 to January 2. 6. She r.:ported progr. ,-ss in setting the library to rights aXid plans for the inventory. She drew attention to a number of non - fiction books which she withdrawn from the shelves since none of theca had circulated for tan years. She explained that some of them she be dis- carded, some rebound, and those retainad in the libra- ry shelved downstairs. She recommended that books dis- carded should be stamped Withdrawn and asked that she be authorized to buy a new stamp for that purpose. 7. She raported that Mr. Stuart had giv 1n some little chairs for tho children's library and r� commanded that Mrs. Hunt write him a 16tter of thanks. In commenting on current expenditures, Dr. Deits said that there had been some necessary irregularities in recent outlay of funds. He said that he would consult with the City Clerk on the matter but that he expected no difficulty therefrom. r �+ 2. . Reporting erg the steps which had t�ien'takan toward securing the services of a p.rmanant librarian, ivir. tbltz said that Mrs. Hunt had bean instructed to place ridvartisaments in the Washington State Lib- rary's bulletin and in- newspapers published in Seattle, Spokane, Port- land, Denver, San Francisco 6), and New York. Miss Jones's ap -lica- tion having bean mentioned, Mr. Daits said that an application form had been mailed to her, but that, considering 'he substantial raise in the- sAlary- dffer -dd, the usual routine of securing a choice of ap- plicants should be followed. The representatives of the A. A. U. W. who vnara pres.nt offered the services of its members to assist in the work no being done in the library. Miss Rutledge outlined briefly the somewhat-complicated pro- cess involved in taking Jnyent,*17 in a library and added that she felt that she is not too successful in training assistants. It was furth- er suggested that help might be volunteered by high - school students or junior - college students. Miss Rutledge thought that if such were the case the young people should be teamed With adults. It seemed the consensus of opinion that volunteer help could be used to advantage. Hours were sat for 10 to 12 o'clock in *he morning and 2 to 4 d'clock in the afternoon. The members of the A.A.U.W. who were present asked for some dis- cussion of the State Library's r:acommendation that a survey be make to determine the advisability of forming a library district of Jef- ferson County and adjacent ar >eas and for a statement of the Board's thought on the subject. Mr. Deits thereupon pres:ahted some salient points pro and con regarding the matter. He recommended that before any action were taken by the A.A.U.W. ,d: Ear. McCloskey be asked to address the orgar.17 -t3on on the profosition. He further warned that there were portltLwdtl zrguments against such a library district being formed.
