The meeting of the Library hoard was called to order on October 6
at 1-10 P.M. Present were: Mr. Deits, Dr. Chuljain, Miss Rutledge,
Sallie Hill, and Mrs. McAllister, a visitor.
Mr. Deits asked about keys matching the new locks in the library
building. Miss Ru +ledge gave him the information.
Mr. De lts opened + -he subject of the fee paid by non- r,.sldents for
the privilege of withdraw.Ing books from Dort Toy ^nsend's library. It was
agreed that the fee should be increased and that a notice to that effect
be published in the Leader. However, it was not determined what the fee
should be.
Miss Rutledge made reference to work being done to bring the Accession
book up to date. Miss. Hill inouired about the practice of keeping such
a record in a modern library. Miss Rutledge advised in libraries compara-
ble in size to ours, such a record is advisable.
Miss Rutledge reported that she abandoning the recent practice of sub -
scribing for magazines through and has asked for bids on the
magazines for which we shall renew subscription from a California company.
In regard to certain issues of some particularly useful magazines
which are not now in our files; e.g., The National Geographic and News -
week,'it was decided to ask in the Leader that such issues be given us.
In a discussion as to what magazines shoud be retained in our files
• and for how long, Miss Rutledge said that the State Library advised the
retention for ten years.
Miss Rutledge reported that Mrs. Cummings had completed the Financial
Report.
Mrs. McA1*11ster, having indicated that she had made some observations
of our libraary, mace some recommendation regarding the operation of it;
1. That the library be closed for a month to afford opportunity
for those now engaged in lotting it to rights to complete the
job without' interruption.
2. That beginning in 1965 the library be open twenty -three hours
a weak instead of thirty - :three hours a. under the pres,,�nt program,
3. That the library be open but five clays a.- week. .
4. That hereafter the library be closed one month in each year to
afford the librarian holiday time.
5. That more effort be made to train high- school students to observe
riles of acceptable conduct in the library.
6. That a checker be seated. near the exit to ;.prevent library mater -
rials being carriod a�Nay illegitimately.

7. That some books on our library shelves be disposed of as sug-
gested by Miss Reynolds of the.State Library in correspondence
with the speaker.
8. That the fireplaces at both ends of the main floor be used for
shelving; space.
There was some discussion of these sugg�_)stions principally on the
subject of student discl..pline in the library. No action was taken.
The meeting adjourned at 2:15 P.M.
