HomeMy WebLinkAbout051881• 5/18/81 The meeting was called to order at 7 :35, Konrad Schwenke pre- siding. 1. A welcome was extended to the members of the City Council. Introductions were made. The main purpose of the meeting was to tour the library with Bev Lamb conducting the tour. Questions, problems and concerns were discussed along the tour. 1. Bev highlighted the special sections of the li- brary: the Appropriate Technology - Olympic Alterna- tive Center; reference section with atlases; artist - of- the -month program, etc. 2. In reference to the microfiche demonstration and explanation, she explained that relative to other libraries an the state, the Port Townsend library uses the system on a greater percentage basis, in- cluding the Seattle Public Library. 3. Bev also emphasized the copy machine; country library loan systems magazine collection; large print books; the Northwest Collection; and the removal to the downstairs areaof the children's collection. 4. In the children's section she emphasized the new desk. 5. Bev explained that for her first years the prior- ities for the library were very clear. There has been a 500% increase in circulation and 30% of the bud - get was 'used to improve the children's collection. High school students have been encouraged to use the library for study purposes. b. Problems relative to the library are cutbacks in budget that necessitate staff reduction that could be implemented by July 1. 7. Bev also explained the McNaughton's system for keeping up with demand for current titles on a lease and return,:,plan. 8. Presentation was made of the last 5 -year plan. 9. Discussion of the adaptation of the Office of Human Affairs by the library was initiated. Bev ex- plained that taking over such functions would help consolidate information, but that staff shortages could cause problems. Referral service is a new con - cept for libraries. 10. There was some discussion of plant to expand the library's current physical space with a spe6 ial levy of no ceiling limit. The heating bills and problems of dealing with an older building were also discussed. 11. The summer reading program was also discussed. It is culled "20,000 Books Under the Sea." The meeting was adjourned at 8 :50
