RETREAT, JANUARY 23. In two parts:-Board and Staff, summaries of work of past year, and plans for coming year. -- Regular Board Meeting, MORNING SESSION with entire Board and entire Staff; Council Member Julie McCulloch attended part of the session. Sidle commented on her year in the Chair, and on various projects. Director Lamb described Staff objectives: - Signs in Library indicating key locations, cost about $50 in budget. . -- Public Relations: shaped toward specific targets, on available services such as bibliography. - More efficient Work Stations. - Wage rates - comparable with City, with County. - Up to date job reviews and descriptions. - Children's Librarian added idea, from Amer. Library Assoc.; of Cards for Kids; emphasize belonging to Library. - Janet Anderson, Asst., described Discovery Program, and Career Develppnt, computer program, yearly, bought for 1987. An expensive program; possibly joint with schools. Other funding possibilities. Use of Leader articles explaining Library's Young Adult Program. Director: Circulation figures, increase first 5 years (about 60%) then decrease as County Library came onstream; 1987 back to previous peak. Children's (first floor) steady increase, triple in 11 years, also steady increase in % of total, nearly double in 11 years to 1987 - 439/6 of total;. - Book policy, selection and weeding; policy is in place but should be reviewed. Watson suggested publicizing special funds; for memorial, or by special groupsle+c- Chidren's Librarian: 'first floor' includes pre - school, youth from 6th Grade up, and Young Adult, to 18 -20 yr. age. First floor also sees many families. -- Increasing % circulation reflects cumul. response, e,g* talks at schools, topical tie -ins like Garfield. - Accessing is big job; reading reviews for selection. Paperbacks are easy for kids to handle, in packs etc. Withdrawals at rate of about 400 per year, out of dais, damaged. - Community Work - at Grant School about 40 times last year; class visits to Library; wish lists for new library. - Group activities - Story Time, 40 times, 6 to 20 persons, with parents. Summer programs - movies at Baptitt church (for sufficient room). T -shirt printing - 90 persons. Reading support project, beginning.
