AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND
RENAMING A PORTION OF MAPLE STREET (FROM OAK
STREET TO DEAD END AT APPROXIMATELY' J' STREET) TO
MAPLE PLACE
WHEREAS, the City received a request to change the name of a portion of
Maple Street (from Oak Street to dead end at approximately J Street) to Maple Place
to avoid confusion with other portions of Maple Street and to facilitate emergency
response to residents of Maple Street (from Oak Street to dead end at approximately
'J' Street; and
WHEREAS, there are three current improved segments of Maple Street:
from Oak Street to dead end at approximately 'J' Street, and continuing from 'K' Street
to 'P' Street; from 'Q' Street to approximately'S' Street; and from 'T' Street to 'V'
Street; and
WHEREAS, a topographic separation, i.e., a steep ravine and plat separation,
exists between each segment; and
WHEREAS, Maple Place is currently used by the U.S. Post Office as the
"official" street name for Maple Street from Oak Street to dead end at approximately
'J' Street; and
WHEREAS, the change will not create any known discrepancies in the current
house numbering of the area, and current addressing for any numerical discrepancies
that historically exist can be dealt with under a separate change system, if necessary;
and
WHEREAS, the naming of a "dead-end" roadway of this type as a "place" is
consistent with the Uniform House Numbering. Basic Grid System. Street Names and

WHEREAS, the City Council determines that a change of name as requested is
appropriate,
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Port Townsend ordains:
SECTION 1. Street Name Change. The name of Maple Street, from Oak
Street to dead end at approximately 'J' Street, is changed to "Maple Place," with
appropriate street sign reflecting this formal change.

SECTION 2. Severability. If any provision of this ordinance or its
application to any person or circumstance is held invalid, the remainder of the
ordinance, or the application of the provision to other persons or circumstances is not
affected.
This ordinance shall take effect and be in force five days after the date of its
publication in the manner provided by law.
Adopted by the City Council of the City of Port Townsend, Washington, at a
regular meeting thereof, held this sixth day of July, 2004.
