HomeMy WebLinkAbout79-005 RESOLUTION NO. 79-05 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND URGING THE WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO IMMEDIATELY INSTITUTE VEHICLE FERRY SERVICE AT LOFALL-SOUTH POINT ON HOOD CANAL AND ALSO URGING THAT NO TOLLS BE PLACED ON ANY FUTURE BRIDGE ACROSS HOOD CANAL. WHEREAS, the economic well-being of the North Olympic Peninsula is dependent upon fast, convenient vehicle access to the Seattle metropolitan area and Kitsap County Bremerton area, and WHEREAS, since the sinking of the Hood Canal bridge, travel to the Seattle metropolitan is both inconvenient and time- consuming and impossible to get to Kitsap County except around Hood Canal, and WHEREAS, the people on the North Olympic Peninsula for years have been burdened with carrying more than their fair share of the cost of operating the State Ferry System due to tolls on Hood Canal bridge being diverted to the maintenance of the State Ferry System. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Port Townsend to urge the Washington State Department of Transportation to: 1. 3o Institute vehicle ferry service across Hood Canal at Lofall-South Point as soon as possible, and Move with haste in replacing th e bridge across Hood Canal, and Accept the offer from the Federal Government of finan- cial aid so the total burden is not borne by residents on the North Olympic Peninsula, and That any financial arrangements to pay for a new bridge should not include tolls. PASSED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND AT A REGULAR MEETING OF THE COUNCIL HELD ON THE 19th DAY OF JUNE, 1979. MAYOR
