HomeMy WebLinkAbout87-073RESOLUTION NO. 87 - 73 A R~SOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND ENCOURAGING A BAN ON THE USE OF CERTAIN NON-RECYCLABLE PACKAGING MATERIALS WHEREAS, cities and counties are now facing spiraling wastestream costs and increasing solid waste regulations, and WHEREAS, the difficult decision associated with siting or enlarging landfills raise~significant environmental questions and ~.s'~ acri- monious and divisive to our community~ and WHEREAS, recycling solid waste is imperative in order to protect the environment and reduce costs, and WHEREAS, non-recyclable packaging materials, such as plastic gro- cery bags, styrofoam fast food containers, and certain non-recyc- lable beverage containers now constitute a substantial percentage of our nation's wastestream, and WHEREAS, these non-recyclable materials produce toxic material when burned, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVE~ that the City of Port Townsend call for legislation which would prohibit the use or sale of non-recyc- lable packaging materials, such as plastic grocery bags, styrofoam fast food containers, and certain non-recyclable beverage containers throughout the state.
