HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-034 Supporting the preservation of existing trail corridors in Quimper Wildlife and Cappy's Woods area.Resolution 09-034 Preserving Existdng Trail Corridors Page 1 qf2 RESOLUTION N0.09-034 A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE PRESERVATION OF EXISTING TRAIL CORRIDORS IN THE QUIMPER WILDLIFE CORRIDOR AND CAPPY'S WOODS AREA THROUGH PURCHASE OF ADJACENT PARCELS FROM WILLING SELLERS, OR THROUGH DONATION, OR THROUGH THE ESTABLISHMENT OF CONSERVATION EASEMENTS WHEREAS, the City's adopted Comprehensive Plan supports the establishment and preservation of trails within open space and wooded areas; and WHEREAS, the City has adopted a management plan for the Quimper Wildlife Corridor that includes the preservation of trails in the area; and WHEREAS, the City has adopted aNon-motorized Transportation Plan which includes trails located within the Cappy's Woods area; and WHEREAS, these trails aze identified specifically in the Non-motorized Transportation Plan (Exhibit 1); and WHEREAS, the City has worked cooperatively with the Jefferson Land Trust to seek grant and other funding to acquire properties and establish conservation easements in the Quimper Wildlife Corridor; and WHEREAS, the City has received Conservation Future funding to purchase land from willing sellers in the Quimper Wildlife Corridor; and WHEREAS, the Jefferson Land Trust and the Friends of Cappy's Woods and Trails have raised funds to acquire from willing sellers land that is adjacent to identified trail corridors in the Quimper Wildlife Corridor and Cappy's Woods and/or establish conservation easements on these properties; and WHEREAS, the City supports these efforts and finds them consistent with the purpose and intent of the Comprehensive Plan; and WHEREAS, the City may in the future become aware of additional opportunities to acquire from willing sellers land that is adjacent to identified trail corridors in the Quimper Wildlife Corridor and Cappy's Woods area and/or to establish conservation easements on these properties, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Port Townsend that the City of Port Townsend will seek, as grant or private funding becomes available, to acquire from willing sellers pazcels located on either side of identified major Resolution 09-034 Preserving Existing Trail Corridors Page 2 of 2 trail corridors in Cappy's Woods and the Quimper Wildlife Corridor and/or to establish conservation easements on these properties. ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Port Townsend at a regular meeting thereof, held this fifth day of October 2009.
