RESOLUTION 95- II
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT
TOWNSEND INDICATING SUPPORT FOR THE DESIGNATION OF THE
NORTHWEST STRAITS l\'lARlNE SANCTUARY
WHEREAS, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the State of
Washington are presently engaged in a process which may lead to the establishment of a
National Marine Sanctuary in Washington waters; and
WHEREAS, the preliminary area of study encompasses the waters of Northern Puget
Sound, The San Juan Islands, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, including local waters, and
WHEREAS, the proposed Northwest Straits Sanctuary, in conjunction with the existing
Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, could playa vital role in our understanding
and protection of our invaluable marine heritage; and
WHEREAS, Port Townsend's economic vitality is closely tied with the marine
environment through tourism, fishing, and marine trades; and
WHEREAS, the establishment of a Northwest Straits Marine Sanctuary could positively
benefit the economic well-being of citizens of Port Townsend and Jefferson County; and
\VHEREAS, it is important that the citizens of Port Townsend need to be well
represented in the process of developing a sanctuary proposal,
NOW THEREFORE
BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Port Townsend is in support of the process to
develop a Northwest Stratts National Marine Sanctuary proposal, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Port Townsend requests that the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the State of Washington inform,
consult with, and in any other manner provide full participation for the City of Port
To\vnsend during the process of developing a Northwest Straits National Marine
Sanctuary Proposal.
