A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT
TOWNSEND SUPPORTING THE CAMPAIGN TO KEEP THE USS MISSOURI IN
KITSAP COUNTY
WHEREAS, the USS Missouri is an historic maritime battleship having hOsted the site of the
Surrender by the Japanese to the Allied forces on September 2, 1945;
WHEREAS, the USS Missouri has become an integral part of the Bremerton and Kitsap
Communities during its many years moored in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard;
WHEREAS, the USS Missouri has now been put on the inactive roles by the Department of
Defense with the ultimate goal of relocating the ship from the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard to
a community that will embrace its national historic value by transforming it into an historic
museum;
WHEREAS, the Port Townsend City Council encourages historic preservation efforts that
enrich a community's heritage and contribute to a healthy economic climate;
NOW THEREFORE
BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Port Townsend authorizes the mayor to issue this
Resolution in support of the campaign to keep the USS Missouri in Bremerton.
