AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND AMENDING
THE PORT TOWNSEND MUNICIPAL CODE AMENDING TIT£EIO,
VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC, TO ADD A
NEW CHAPTER 10.30- COMPRESSION BRAKES
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Port Townsend finds that noise from
engine compression brakes can unreasonably disturb and interfere with the peace and
quiet of citizens and visitors; and
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Port Townsend ordains as
follows:
SECTION 1. There is hereby adopted a new Chapter 10.30 - Compression
Brakes, to be added to Title 10, Vehicles and Traffic, of the Port Townsend Municipal
Code, in the form attached as Exhibit A.
SECTION 2. Severability. If any provision of this ordinance or its application to
any person or circumstance is held invalid, the remainder of the ordinance, or the
application of the provision to other persons or circumstances is not affected.
This ordinance shall take effect and be in force five days after the date of its
publication in the .manner provided by law.
Adopted by the City Council of the City of Port Townsend, Washington, at a
regular meeting thereof, held this 7th day of April, 2003.

EXHIBIT A
COMPRESSION BRAKES
Sections:
10.30.010 Prohibited.
10.30.020 Signposting.
10.30.030 Violation - Penalty.
10.30.010 Prohibited.
No person shall use motor vehicle brakes within the city limits of the
City of Port Townsend which are in any way activated or operated by the
compression of the engine of the motor vehicle or any unit or part thereof
unless the brakes are muffled.
10.30.020 Signposting.
The public works department is authorized and directed to post
appropriate signage consistent with the provisions of this chapter.
10.30.030 Violation - Penalty.
Any person violating the provisions of this chapter shall have
committed a traffic infraction and a maximum penalty of $250.00 shall be
imposed.
