A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND
SUPPORTING THE MAIN STREET PROGRAM OF PORT TOWNSEND'S ENTRY
INTO THE GREAT AMERICAN MAIN STREET AWARDS COMPETITION.
WHEREAS,
The vitality and soul of the City of Port Townsend are focused in our commercial
historic districts and that they are a critical component of the economic engine of
the community. They are where people see each other on a day to day basis and
they reflect and create the personality of our town;
WHEREAS,
The City of Port Townsend wholeheartedly supports revitalization efforts that
promote and sustain the economic development of the downtown and uptown
businesses for the benefit of the City's residents;
WHEREAS,
The City of Port Townsend encourages the preservation and restoration of the
community's historic commercial structures which reflect significant elements of
the City's heritage;
WHEREAS,
The City of Port Townsend supports the stabilization and the improvement of
property values in the commercial historic districts by encouraging new buildings
and development that will be harmonious with existing buildings and areas;
WHEREAS,
The City of Port Townsend participates in the revitalization efforts through
historic preservation ordinances, financial contributions, commitment to
maintaining local government offices in the downtown, revolving loan program
administered by the Main Street Program, and small business assistance programs;
and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Port Townsend fully supports this
entry into the Great American Main Street Awards competition.
ADOPTED by the City Council of Port Townsend and signed by the Mayor this 21st day of
October, 1996.
