HomeMy WebLinkAbout99-001Resolution No. 99- ~ d) I RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND, REQUESTING THAT THE CITY ADMINISTRATION IMPLEMENT A STRATEGY TO ADDRESS THE 'YEAR 2000N COMPUTER PROBLEM The City Council of the City of Port Townsend, Washington, does resolve as follows: WHEREAS, the City of Port Townsend recognizes the Year-2000 ("Y2K') computer problem is a serious public management issue affecting all phases of city operation; and WHEREAS, the possibility of embedded computer chips causing unanticipated failures of key systems is a very real threat to the welfare of this city; and WltE~S, the City administration has appointed a Y2K coordinator to bring consistency to the process of dealing with this problem. The Y2K coordinator shall meet with the city administration and department heads on a regular basis and report on progress as requested by the City Council; and WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to formalize the process of dealing with this important public issue, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council for the City of Port Townsend as follows: 1. The City of Port Townsend shall not purchase any computer hardware, software or any equipment which may contain computer chips unless the vendor has warranted the product as Y2K-compliant in contractual language approved by the City Attorney. 2. The Council requests that the City Administration have all City Departments inventory and assess City equipment which contains computer chips using the following order of priority: 1. Mission critical; 2. Necessary; and 3. Labor saving. 3. The Council requests that the City Administration appoint a "Community Y2K Advisory Task Force" to facilitate communication with the community regarding this important issue. 4. The Council requests the City Administration to apply fixes and write contingency plans for the failure of MISSION CRITICAL systems and for the failure of systems beyond the control of City management such as: other sources. 2. 3. 4. The public power supply system. The food supply system. The fuel supply system. The potential reduction of city tax revenues from tourism, commerce and ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Port Townsend and signed by the Mayor on this 4th day of January, 1999.
