HomeMy WebLinkAbout99-016RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND SUPPORTING THE PROPOSAL FOR A JEFFERSON COUNTY ADULT LEARNING CENTER AS A PILOT PROJECT FOR 1999 THROUGH 2001 The City Council of the City of Port Townsend, Washington, does resolve as follows: WHEREAS, the 1998 Legislature directed the Higher Education Coordinating Board (HECB) to study rural access to adult education in Jefferson County; and WltEREAS, on September 14, 1998, consultants MGT of America, Inc. reported findings and recommendations. The recommendations included a pilot project in Jefferson County that could prove how adult education could be expanded in rural areas at minimal cost; and WtmREAS, on December 7, 1998, the HECB unanimously approved a resolution calling for the 1999 Legislature to support this pilot project. The proposed pilot project is compatible with and implements the recommendations of Governor Gary Locke's "2020 Commission," NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council for the City of Port Townsend supports: 1. The authorization for a "Countywide Campus" pilot project in Jefferson County, for the years 1999-2001, with results to be reported to the 2001 Washington State Legislature; 2. The creation of a "Jefferson County Adult Education Center" co-located at Peninsula College extension and Washington State University (WSU) extension, with staff to perform outreach, coordination of providers, classes and facilities, promotion, recruitment, and student services; and 3. A "distance learning" technology upgrade at WSU and Peninsula College extensions. ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Port Townsend and signed by the Mayor on this 1st day of February, 1999.
