RESOLUTION NO. 20-049
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND,
WASHINGTON, MODIFYING THE MERCHANT INFORMATION SIGN PROGRAM
PER PORT TOWNSEND MUNICIPAL CODE 17.76.085(C)(2)
WHEREAS, Port Townsend Municipal Code 17.76.085 describes the merchant
information sign program that establishes uniform off-premises signs for merchants located in
the Port Townsend National Historic Landmark District and allows merchants to purchase
plaques on City wayfinding signs; and
WHEREAS, the merchant information sign program has not been used or updated since
2015, and the wayfinding signs are outdated and some are incorrect; and,
WHEREAS, the City, in consultation with Port Townsend Main Street Program and the
Jefferson County Historical Society, has redesigned the wayfinding signs, and the new design
does not allow space for merchant plaques; and
WHEREAS, the Port Townsend Historic Preservation Committee approved the new
wayfinding design on September 1, 2020; and
WHEREAS, the City has notified the merchants currently listed on the wayfinding signs
of the proposed changes to the merchant information sign program; and
WHEREAS, the City included $3200 in the 2020 budget for the new wayfinding signs;
and
WHEREAS, the Port Townsend Municipal Code 17.76.085(C)(2) requires Council
action to modify the merchant information sign program;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Port
Townsend as follows:
The merchant sign information program is modified to allow the removal of the previous
wayfinding signs and installation of new signs that do not include space for merchant
information.
