HomeMy WebLinkAbout00-065Resolution No. 00- RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND TO SUPPORT CITY VOLUNTEER IN CONNECTION WITH HARASSMENT ARISING OUT OF SERVICE FOR CITY The City Council of the City of Port Townsend, Washington resolves as follows: WHEREAS, the City has an obligation and a strong public interest in maintaining a safe work environment for employees and volunteers performing work and services for the City, including protecting employees and City volunteers from unlawful harassment from others; and WHEREAS, it is in the best interests of the City to be supportive of the dedication of City volunteers, recognizing numerous benefits of its citizen volunteer program in order to maintain a good relationship for its success; and WHEREAS, Sally Robbins served as a volunteer Chairperson of the "Noise Ordinance Subcommittee" of the Community Oriented Policing Advisory Board (COPAB), until her resignation shortly after March, 2000; and WHEREAS, Sally Robbins filed a Petition for an Order of Protection (Unlawful Harassment) on July 28, 2000, in the Jefferson County District Court, Cause No. 8081, alleging unwanted contacts resulting in fear arising from a person's verbal harassment occurring in a public place on July 27, 2000; and WHEREAS, the Court entered a Temporary Protection Order on JulY 28, 2000, and an Order for Protection from Unlawful Civil Harassment on August 11, 2000; and WHEREAS, the Respondent in Cause No. 8081 filed a Notice of Appeal; and WHEREAS, based on the allegations in the Petition, alleging harassment arising out of the Complainant's former volunteer service for the City, the City should provide legal assistance and pay the costs incurred by the petitioner in obtaining the Order for Protection from Unlawful Civil Harassment. // NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council for the City of Port Townsend that 1. The City Administration is authorized to pay the filing fee and service fee for the Complainant in Cause No. 8081 to obtain the Order of Protection, and The City Attorney is authorized to take reasonable and necessary steps in the discretion of the City Attorney to provide assistance to the Complainant in the matter of the Petition for Order of Protection in Jefferson County District Court Cause No. 8081, including in the appeal filed against the entry of Order for Protection dated August 11, 2000.
