RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT
TOWNSEND RECOMMENDING THAT THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS FORM A JEFFERSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER
CITIZENS' ADVISORY BOARD TO ADVISE AND MAKE
RECOMMENDATIONS TO JEFFERSON COUNTY ON ENHANCING
ANIMAL CONTROL SERVICES AND ANIMAL WELFARE SERVICES,
AND INCREASING PUBLIC AWARENESS ON THESE MATTER
The City Council of the City of Port Townsend, Washington resOlves as
follows:
WHEREAS, the City of Port Townsend and Jefferson County both have a
strong and compelling a desire to Protect animal welfare; and
WHEREAS, Jefferson County provides for animal control and welfare services,
including operation of the Jefferson County Animal Shelter, to residents of Jefferson
County and, with contribution from the City of Port Townsend, to residents of the City
of Port Townsend; and
WHEREAS, an advisory committee with a broad cross section of citizens could
provide valuable advice and recommendations to the Jefferson County Board of County
Commissioners on ways to enhance animal control services and animal welfare
services, and to increase public awareness on these matters, by among other things,
addressing and making recommendations on such issues as
· level of customer service;
· increasing revenue;
· diligent investigations;
· more adoptions; and
· decreasing the feral cat problem within Jefferson County, and
· ways to achieve higher levels of service without incurring additional expense;
and
WHEREAS, an advisory committee which includes a citizen and official
representative from the City of Port Townsend would provide a forum for policies and
policy changes affecting the City to be developed and reviewed, and further provide an
opportunity through the official City representative of providing a constructive
relationship between the City Council and the Board of County Commissioners on
animal control and animal welfare iSsues;
NOW, TI-IEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Port Townsend, to request the Jefferson County Board of County Commissioners to
form a citizens animal shelter advisory board, which board would comprise a broad mix
of citizens, including a representative from the City of Port Townsend, and which
board would advise and make recommendations to the Jefferson County Board of
County Commissioners on ways to enhance animal control services and animal welfare
services, and to increase public awareness on these matters, by among other things,
addressing and making recommendations on such issues as
· level of customer service;
· increasing revenue;
· diligent investigations;
· more adoptions; and
· decreasing the feral cat problem within Jefferson County, and
· ways to achieve higher levels of service without incurring additional expense
ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Port Townsend and signed by the
Mayor on this 19th day of March, 2001.
