HomeMy WebLinkAbout16-031 Expressing Preliminary Support for the Human Rights Alliance North Sound Proposal to Consider the Formation of a Human Rights Commission in Jefferson County Resolution 16-031 RESOLUTION NO. 16-031 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND, WASHINGTON,EXPRESSING PRELIMINARY SUPPORT FOR THE HUMAN RIGHTS ALLIANCE NORTH SOUND PROPOSAL TO CONSIDER THE FORMATION OF A HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION IN JEFFERSON COUNTY WHEREAS,the Human Rights Alliance North Sound (HRANS)has worked with City Council and staff to continue to raise awareness of the ongoing need to foster human rights among diverse populations, including but not limited to race, gender, national origin, sexual orientation and gender identity, and people with disabilities; and, WHEREAS, HRANS is proposing to seek grants to fund a task force to consider the formation of a task force whose purpose it will be to recommend the formation of a Human Rights Commission in Jefferson County; and, WHEREAS,the City of Port Townsend has a history of inclusiveness and non- discrimination, as shown in its personnel policies, contracting policies, ongoing anti- discrimination training for City employees and submission of data for inclusion in the Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index; NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Port Townsend as follows: Section 1. The Council reaffirms its commitment to human rights and equality for all of its citizens, regardless of race, gender, national origin, sexual orientation and gender identity, or physical abilities. Section 2. The Council applauds the efforts of HRANS, and supports its preliminary investigation into how to better foster equality and human rights. Section 3. Within existing financial and staff resources, the City Manager is authorized to provide information to HRANS in support of this first step in their strategic plan.
