AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND RELATING TO THE
OPERATION OF BICYCLES; AMENDING PORT TOWNSEND MUNICIPAL CODE
SECTION 10.32.060 TO ADD TO THE SIDEWALKS UPON WHICH BICYCLES MAY
NOT BE RIDDEN
WHEREAS, Chapter 10.32 of the Port Townsend Municipal Code ("PTMC") regulates
the conduct of bicycle riders within the City; and
WHEREAS, PTMC 10.32 prohibits riding bicycles on certain sidewalks in the
downtown area; and,
WHEREAS, staff recommends that the City Council expand this prohibition to include
the Taylor Street stairs between Washington Street and Jefferson Street;
NOW, THEREFORE,the City Council of the City of Port Townsend ordains as
follows:
Section 1. Section 10.32.060 of the Port Townsend Municipal Code is amended to read as
follows:
10.32.060 Operation on certain sidewalks prohibited.
It is unlawful, except as provided in this section, to ride any bicycle upon
sidewalks along Water Street extending from Monroe Street to Harrison Street; on
Washington Street extending from Monroe Street to Taylor Street; on Taylor
Street extending from Washington Street to Front Street; on Taylor Street
extending from Jefferson Street to Washington Street including the stairs and the
grassy area within the right-of-way; on Adams Street extending from Washington
Street to Water Street; on Quincy Street extending from Water Street to
Washington Street; on Lawrence Street extending from Taylor Street to Harrison
Street; on 12th Street extending from Landes Street to Haines Street, including the
transit passenger waiting area on Madison Street from Washington Street to the
City Dock, and on Sheridan Street between 7th Street and l lth Street. Uniformed
and plainclothes bicycle patrol officers, while conducting official police business,
are exempted from the provisions of this section. (Ord. 2906 § 1, 2005; Ord. 2614

Section 2. Severability. If any provision of this ordinance or its application to any person
or circumstance is held invalid, the remainder of the ordinance, or the application of the
provision to other persons or circumstances, is not affected.
Section 3. Publication. This Ordinance shall be published by an approved summary
consisting of the title.

Section 4. Effective Date. This ordinance shall take effect and be in force five days
after the date of its publication in the manner provided by law.
ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Port Townsend at a regular meeting
thereof, held this 15th day of June, 2015.
