BRICK REPOINTING/MORTAR RESTORATION
In accordance with Port Townsend Municipal Code 17.30.140A all
improvements in the Historic Overlay District must follow and conform
with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of
Historic Properties. The Standards require that repointing occur with
period mortar i.e., lime based mortar. See attached Preservation Brief
on Repointing Mortar Joints in Historic Masonry Buildings
Repointing Of Existing Mortar Joints Using Compatible Lime Based
Mortar:
- Mortar mix design must be pre-approved. A site-mixed
inspection is required or mortar must be purchased from
approved agency e.g., US Heritage. Once a mix design is
approved, a test panel shall be prepared with a 7—14 day
curing period, and then subsequent changes or adjustments can
be made to the mix if needed. Provide documentation for
approved mix prior to repointing work.
Qualified masons are required for lime based mortar work.
Periodic inspections and observation are required throughout the
repainting project by a special inspector trained in the use of
appropriate materials and methods for repointing mortar joints in
historic masonry buildings. Special Inspector shall provided
credentials or demonstrate competency to the Building Department
prior to beginning work. Inspection reports shall be copied to the
Building Department in a timely manner. All corrections are the
responsibility of the contractor.

GENERAL CONDITIONS
1. Contractors working on this project are required to have a Labor& Industries contractor's
registration number and a City business license. Failure to provide proof of this documentation prior
to work may result in job shut down while this is accomplished.
2. Temporary erosion and sediment control(TESC) measures shall be installed on-site and inspected
prior to beginning construction; call 385-2294.Measures shall include installation of silt fencing and
graveled construction entrance(see attached details). Soils exposed during construction shall be
temporarily stabilized with mulching,plastic sheeting,etc. Soils shall be permanently stabilized with
seeding,plantings,sodding,etc. once construction is complete.Applicant is responsible for protection
of adjacent properties.
3. All elements of engineering including nailing, holdowns, sheathing, and alternate braced wall panels
(ABWP) require inspection prior to cover.
4. Owner or owner's agent shall review and oversee correction of any and all deficiencies noted by
required inspections.
5. Re-inspection is required after any corrections are completed.
6. The Building Department is unable to pass final inspection on your project until Public Works
requirements have been completed and inspected.For Public Works inspection call 385-2294; a
minimum of twenty-four hours notice is required.Public Works approval must be received prior to
scheduling the Building Department's final inspection.
7. Final Inspections and Certificate of Occupancy are required PRIOR to occupancy.
8. All building permits expire if work is not begun within 180 days of issuance,or if the work authorized
by the permit is suspended or abandoned for a period of 180 days after the work is begun. The
building official may grant a one-time 180 day extension if a request is received in writing,and the
lack of progress occurred for a justifiable cause.
9. Revisions require review and approval prior to making changes in the field. Contact the Building
Department at 379-5095 prior to making changes in the field.
10. POST THIS PERMIT ON-SITE WITH THE APPROVED PLANS.
