Wahlstrom, Richard Williams (arrived late).
Staff: none
Visitors: Gene Brannon
II Approval of agenda — Since nobody had received an agenda and the presiding officer
was absent, the group drafted an agenda
III. Approval of Minutes —.Minutes were unanimously approved for the April and May
meetings.
IV. Business
1. Upcoming Trail Work Day— The date set for the next trail work day had been June
9th, but because no organizing had been done yet, it was decided to hold it on June 16th in
order to get the word out. Because the board had no confirmation from Mary Heather that
the adjacent landowners had been contacted about putting up new fence on the north side
of the 25th Street r/w between Hooker and Baker, the board decided to start work on the
corridor by doing maintenance on the 25th Street Trail from Ivy to Hooker. Parking is
available on Ivy. Volunteers should bring brush tools (loppers and clippers). Wire cutters
may be handy too. Jolly will be on-site manager for the project.
2. Bike to School Day Report -Lys noted that despite a good effort to organize three
bike trains to Blue Heron Middle School, no students participated. By counting bikes at
the school's bike parking racks, it was determined that twice the number of students
biked to school independently that day from in-school promotion of the event.
Jolly questioned the effectiveness of bike trains. Lys pointed out that they would be more
effective with earlier designation of routes and promotion of the event through school
newsletters, the PTA and in the neighborhoods through which they pass. It was also
suggested to organize incentives like receiving special treats, ringing a gong and
receiving special recognition.
The Bike to School Day was successfi l overall with all schools registering at the national
website. Lys spoke to the students at Swan School a few days before the event, and they
had an excellent turn out. (They also handed out brownies to all students who biked to
school that day). School administrator, Bonnie White, also reported that the school had
won one of the three bike racks that was offered through the national organization.
Other suggestions were: to start organizing and promoting the bike train routes earlier, to
conduct school staff(principals and teachers) and parent rides to school, to obtain up to
date student rosters for determining bike train routes, to publish promotion in the City
newsletter and to make sure all trails near schools are well maintained.
V. General Discussion -
- Visitor Gene Brannon was queried to see if he had any issues to bring up. He was
from Hadlock and just visiting. Lys mentioned the new trail planned for Hadlocic
from Irondale to the county library.
- Questions for staff:
- why the new trail map has not been posted to the City's website,
- board members need clarification about the board's role in promoting bicycling
and walking, i.e. what does this mean and what types of promotional activities
are allowed.
- what is the schedule for appointing the missing member of the board
- Longest Day of Trails fundraising event coming up on June 24th
