ACCESSIBILITY DESIGN FOR ALL PUBLIC TOILET ROOMS UNOBSTRUCI Public toilet rooms should be located so as to be found easily, and to minimize physical stress and travel distance. In addition to adequate clearance *LOOP TYPED through doorways, careful attention must be given to the provision of sufficient wheelchair maneuvering space through vestibules and partitioned entrance ACCESSIBLE spaces. The interior of the room must allow space for a wheelchair user to gain access to all olthe facilities, and to turn full circle All mechanisms must be reachable and operable by persons who have reach and manipulative limitations. Properly utilized, the clearance underneath fixtures can be Included as part of the unobstructed floor space, thus reducing UNOBSTRUC' room size. In public toilet rooms with numerous fixures, it is best to locate the accessible fixtures where the ACCESSIBLE wheelchair, or persons using walking aids, will not obstruct access to other fixtures. In toilet rooms used predominantly by children, fixture heights should be appropriately adjusted. The drawing on the far right of the facing page il- *PRIVACY SCE lustrates the permissible overlap of fixtures and unobstructed floor space for a toilet room with one water closet. The drawings of alternate vestibule arrangements demonstrate recommended solutions - ACCESSIBLE that do not create the physical hardship of passing through two doorways. The wallboard was secured to the OSB panel facers with PC cupped head drywall nails, 1 -5/8" long, fspaced 8" o.c. along the wall perimeter and 12" o.c., vertically and 16" o.c., horizontally. The joints in the gypsum wallboard were treated with joint compound and paper tape. The test wall was then instrumented with thermocouples across the unexposed surface. '. THERMOCOUPLES All temperatures monitored on the unexposed surface of this wall assembly were measured using 24 GA., electrically- welded, Type K Chromel - Alumel, glass - glass insulated (Special Limits of Error: ± 1.1 °C) thermocouples, purchased with calibration certifications and lot traceability. To meet the requirements of ASTM E119, thirteen thermocouples were installed on the unexposed surface of the wall and covered with 6" x 6" x 0.40" thick dry, felted, mineral fiber pads, held in place with a small daub of silicone adhesive on each corner. These thermocouples were distributed across the unexposed surface of the wall at various locations (see Thermocouple Placement, Appendix B). TEST RESULTS AND OBSERVATIONS: FIRE EXPOSURE TEST The test wall, contained in a loadbearing frame assembly, was placed in front of the Laboratory's vertical wall furnace on August 15, 1995. A superimposed load of 22,000 lbf (2,200 lbf/ft) was applied at least 30 minutes prior to the test and maintained throughout the fire and hose stream tests. The thermocouple leads were then connected to the data acquisition system and their outputs verified. The laboratory air temperature was 80 °F, with a relative humidity of 74 %. At 9:14 a.m., the furnace was fired and the standard E119 time - temperature curve followed for a period of 60 minutes. The pressure difference between the inside of the furnace (measured by a pressure tap located approximately 1/3 of the way down from the top of the specimen, on the horizontal centerline of the furnace) and the laboratory ambient air, was maintained at — 0.03" of water column throughout the entire test, following the first five minutes of the test, which resulted in placing the neutral pressure plane at the top of the specimen. The test was witnessed by Mr. Jerry King, Premier Industries, Inc.
