HomeMy WebLinkAbout01From Mayor Michelle Sandoval
Happy New Year 2012!
This will be my last newsletter as Mayor and I want to thank all of you for the honor of rep-
resenting you and this city for the last four years. It has been a wonderful experience.
I want to wish all of us a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year. It has been a tough 2011.
Many in our community continue to have difficulty financially as the economy continues to stag-
nate. Sometimes it’s hard to keep optimistic in the face of predictions of continued economic tur-
moil in the US and throughout the world. But here is what I know: without health, no amount of fi-
nancial security matters; without the presence of love in our lives with family and friends, it’s diffi-
cult to be joyful. And if we can count on both those blessings, prosperity through community brings
us rich rewards. Let’s remember the gifts of this community; the beautiful place we share and the
caring and passionate people who are our neighbors.
Please take the time as part of your New Year’s resolutions to see how your neighbors are faring.
Perhaps there is something we can do to make each other’s lives a bit richer. We need first to
acknowledge that we all have blessings to count and we need to more than ever acknowledge
those beside us in this community. To truly prosper as a community we need to bring everyone
along.
I wish you the absolute best for 2012.

Wondering what to do with your
Christmas tree after the holidays?
Residents have two options:
1. City of Port Townsend curbside recycling
customers can place their trees out for
regular yard waste pickup December 26 -
30 and January 9 - 13.
If your tree is over four feet tall, please cut it in half
before placing it out for curbside recycling. Trees
with flocking or tinsel will be taken as garbage and
you will be charged extra accordingly. Please call
DM Disposal at 385-6612 for more information.
2. Christmas trees can be hauled to the City’s
Biosolids Composting Facility, located at the
Jefferson County Solid Waste Transfer Station
off Jacob Miller Road. There is a minimum
charge of $5.00 to drop off yard debris.
Trees need to be free of all tinsel, ornaments, and
stands; no flocked trees will be accepted.
The Jefferson County Solid Waste Transfer Sta-
tion (385-3194) is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mon-
day through Saturday.
The Spirit of the Season
In August, City of Port Townsend Police
Officer Luke Bogues read a newspaper
article stating that OlyCAP was cutting
funding for the senior nutrition program
at the PT Community Center. He voluntarily
worked to get a small group of police and fire per-
sonnel together. They raised more than $300 to
buy groceries that they cooked and served to
about two dozen people per night in September.
They volunteered again for the week of Thanks-
giving, raised $125 and had several turkeys donat-
ed to provide a week’s worth of nutrition and a
Thanksgiving meal for the seniors.
They also volunteered a third time to work and
raise money to provide an extravagant feast for
Christmas.
This is a cooperative effort of the Port Townsend
Police Department, East Jefferson Fire Rescue
and the Police Department’s citizen volunteers.
Officer Bogues hopes the efforts inspire other or-
ganizations to come forward and help with the
senior meals program. For more information con-
tact Eleanor Stickney or Laurie Medlicott at the
Community Center, 385-9007.
