A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND,
WASHINGTON, AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO APPLY FOR THE
NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES CHALLENGE GRANT FOR
THE PORT TOWNSEND LIBRARY EXPANSION PROJECT
WHEREAS, the City of Port Townsend desires to apply for $500,000 in challenge grant
funds through the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for the Port Townsend Library
expansion project to include enhancements of its humanities collections and programs; and
WHEREAS, challenge grant funds are capacity -building grants intended to help
institutions secure long-tenn improvements in support of their humanities programs and
resources with fundraising being an integral part of the long-term planning of the program; and
WHEREAS, Grantees may use funds for one -tune capital expenditures, such as
construction and renovation; and
WHEREAS, the goal of the grant funded project is to enhance the Library's capital
campaign by encouraging donors to meet the NEH grant snatch; and
WHEREAS, Grant recipients must raise in non-federal/non-City dollars, three times the
amount of federal funds offered; and
WHEREAS, awarded challenge grant funds will support the Library expansion project to
include its humanities collections and programs.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Port
Townsend that the City Manager is hereby authorized to apply for the National Endowment for
the Humanities challenge grant.
ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Port Townsend at a regular meeting
thereof, held this 251h day of April 2011.
