From Mayor Michelle Sandoval
The summer season is here and we are all
grateful for it. It has been a long wet spring
and we are yearning for warmer weather
and more play time. We see more people
out and about both during the day and into the even-
ing. Please be aware of more walkers and bikers on
our roads especially in the evening hours. The sound
of summer is also the sound of kids playing and teen-
agers gathering on the corners talking. These are
our kids and we should be happy to see them and
hear them.
With many community members committed to spon-
soring all-age gatherings, I would ask those of you
who may not normally go to these events to give
them a try. At these events, I have heard comments
that often surprise me from our older community
members. They are surprised and impressed at the
number of young people here (as they hadn’t mixed
with them before.) I believe it is important for all of us
to have friends of all ages. These gatherings raise
awareness of our community’s age diversity. We are
not simply a retirement community, nor do we want to
be. Also, for younger people this is an opportunity to
understand that age makes little difference when fun
and community come together. As more conversa-
tion continues about the kind of community we are
and want to be, it is important for us to be cognizant
of our graying community and our need to support
our younger community members.
If you are able, please provide these young people
with a job or a mentorship opportunity. At the very
least, strike up a conversation with someone you
don’t know of a different generation. We have a rich
community because of the diversity of experience
and age, and it is a great idea to share those riches. Friday Night Flicks at the Fort!
Thanks to a partnership with Lunar
Flicks, Fort Worden is pleased to offer
movies under the stars! Suggested do-
nation is $5 for families.
Bring blankets and low profile beach chairs. Bring
the whole family! The inflatable movie screen will
be set up in front of the double doors at McCurdy
Pavillion and enjoy the film from the lawn of Little-
field Green. Gates open 7:30, the movie (TBD)
will start around 9:30. Join us on July 22!
If raining, we will cancel and reschedule.

We all have treasured childhood memories of the library. Our Port Townsend Library children have shared …
The library became my special place. There I discovered new worlds, other times and places
that existed in books. My imagination was cultivated.
I learned that I was never alone if I had something to read.
I love my library…I love books. My first memories were of sitting on grandfather’s knee listening to
Mother Goose.
The Children’s Summer Reading Program, that began June 24, is designed to bring the joy of reading and socializing into
the lives of our newborns, toddlers and pre-schoolers through special story times for each age group. Check the sched-
ule at http://ptpubliclibrary.org/Kids/SummerRead2011/Main.html.
The Library delivers almost 300 children’s literacy programs. The Library’s Next 100 Year Expansion Plan envisions
making room for many more children, children’s programs and books. Fulfillment of this vision requires everyone’s contri-
bution. Donations can be accepted through the Library’s website at http://ptpubliclibrary.org/SupportYourLibrary/
LibraryFoundation.html, or with a check to Port Townsend Public Library, 1220 Lawrence St., Port Townsend, WA 98368.
Sister State—Sister City
Washington State and the City of Port Town-
send were gifted a species of rhododendron
developed by Yahiro Homare in celebration of
the 40th anniversary of the Hyogo Prefecture -
Washington’s Sister State.
The rhododendrons that were planted at our State Capi-
tol did not survive and the rhododendrons the City
planted were doing poorly. The plants are being fos-
tered by local citizens, Sarah Fairbanks, Ikue Goldstein
and their friend Kris Burns and are doing well.
We hope these rhododendrons will be able to be trans-
planted and propagated sometime next year. Thank you
Sarah, Ikue and Kris for your care and your green
thumbs!
Compost Recipe
What should you put in your yard waste
bins for curbside collection?
Put only yard debris materials such as woody branch-
es, grass, leaves, and other pulled weeds in yard waste
bins.
Do not put food waste or compostable containers and
utensils into your bins. The City’s compost facility does
not process these types of materials.
Do not put poison hemlock in with your yard de-
bris. Instead place it in a plastic trash bag and toss into
your regular trash. Some other noxious weeds can be
composted because the City’s compost facility process-
es these materials at 160—170 degrees that kills the
seeds. For more informaƟon and assistance with poison
hemlock and other noxious weeds in Port Townsend: hƩp://

Real Estate Sign Update
Port Townsend has many beautiful properties that
can often sell themselves. However, helping folks
see that a property is for sale, lease or rent through
signage can help! “For Sale,” “For Lease” and “For
Rent” Real Estate signs are permitted only on the
property being advertised. Signs in the public right-
of-way (i.e. the area between a street and a side-
walk) or off-premise (directional signs) are not al-
lowed.
Residential properties may have one sign up to 4-
1/2 square feet per sign face and for commercial
properties one sign up to 16 square feet per sign
face. Larger signs require sign permits. Remove
signs within five days after the sale is recorded with
the Jefferson County Auditor.
One exception is during open houses or realtor car-
avan tours. Signs up to 3 square feet per sign face
can be located in nearby public rights-
of-way as long as they do not create a
public hazard.
When the City becomes aware of an
off-premise real estate sign, the seller
or realtor is called and told to remove
the sign within 48 hours or the City will remove it.
Removed signs are kept at City Hall for about one
week before being discarded. Staff will not call prior
to removing signs re-erected in the same off-
premise or right-of-way location. If you are missing
a sign please call to arrange a time to pick it up.
The Sign Code, amended in September 2010, is on
the City website at www.cityofpt.us. For infor-
mation, contact Suzanne Wassmer at 385-0644.
