PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES FOR JANUARY 14, 1993
I. ROLL CALL: 7:00 PM
Planning Commission members present were Ernie Baird, Karen
Erickson, Mark Welch, Bob Rickard, Lisa Enarson and Lois Sherwood.
Cindy Thayer was excused. Staff members present were Kit Perkins,
Michael Hildt and Sheila Spears.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion to approve the minutes, as corrected, for December 10, 1992,
was made by Rickard and seconded by Baird. All were in favor.
III. COMMUNICATIONS: None
IV. OLD BUSINESS: Port Townsend 2020: Getting Together
Kit Perkins explained the purpose of the project is to seek new and
more comfortable ways for Port Townsend citizens to express their
feelings, hopes and concerns about the future of their city. This
pilot session was to test the coffee hour process and get
constructive feedback from the Commission. Perkins outlined the
projected schedule of events and said that the results will help
guide development of the new comprehensive plan.
The visual exercise didn't begin until 8:50 PM and was scheduled
for 40 minutes. Since the "coffee hour" is supposed to take only
two hours in its entirety the suggestion was made to eliminate the
map exercise because the questions cover the same information that
would be discussed in the visual exercise.
Ideas expressed by the Commission include:
1. The wrap up should be simplified and it would
be better to capture the information during
the question session.
2. It is important that participants understand
the purpose of the project and what their
roles are. Make an effort to not raise their
expectations too high.
3.
There needs to be some understanding between
the host and the recorder as to what they want
to come out of the meeting.

4. Participants should be provided with recorder
sheets at the meeting and be given the
opportunity to write their answers to the
questions and turn them into the recorder.
5. Emphasize that "community" can mean many
things but ask participants to focus on "What
do you like about the community?"
6. The fact that this is coming from the city
cannot be disguised and this could be an
opportunity to eliminate some of the
polarization.
7. Since not all the groups will be comprised of
specific neighborhoods, is there a way to
track which neighborhood the opinions are
coming from?
Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Baird, and seconded by
Erickson. The meeting adjourned at 10:00 PM.
