LIBRARY EVENTS:
SCRIBE TO SCREEN RETURNS!
Last year readers and film buffs
were treated to the steaming
tropics of Indonesia for “The
Year of Living Dangerously” –
this year a complete change of
pace will transport the audience
to a small, dry Texas town in
the mid-1950’s with Peter Bog-
danovich’s “The Last Picture Show.”
This highly acclaimed film, based on the 1966
novel by Larry McMurtry, introduces Cybill Shep-
herd and Jeff Bridges and garnered Academy
Awards for Ben Johnson and Cloris Leachman.
Other great performances round out the film,
which also features Ellen Burstyn, Timothy Bot-
toms, Eileen Brennan and Randy Quaid. The
film, an evocative and bittersweet slice of life,
was shot on location in McMurtry’s home town of
Archer City, Texas.
The film begins at 12 noon (box office opens
at 11:30) at the Rose Theatre on Sunday, No-
vember 6. Tickets are $12, and are on sale now
at the Port Townsend Library and Quimper
Sound. Any unsold tickets will be available at
the box office. The event benefits the Friends of
the Library and the Port Townsend Film Festival.
Paperback copies of the novel are available lo-
cally at The Imprint Bookstore.
Following the screening, popular PTFF guest and
film critic Robert Horton and literature professor
Wesley Cecil will lead a Q & A. Guests are then
invited to adjourn to the Upstage Restaurant for
fifties style refreshments to continue the conver-
sation about how the written word is transformed
on the screen.
To get into the mood for the novel and film, visit
the Port Townsend Historical Society’s retrospec-
tive exhibit of “Port Townsend in the Fifties.” His-
torian Steve Levin will present a slide show and
talk about classic movie palaces at the PT Library
on the evening of November 9.

Port Townsend Employee Safety and Health
Committee—by Jay Tjemsland, Equipment Op-
erator, Street/Sewer/Stormwater
The purpose of the City’s Employee Safety and
Health Committee is to maintain a safe and effi-
cient workplace. Responsible employees repre-
senting each city department were selected by
their supervisors to be part of this committee.
Safety is our number one priority. In the daily
work schedule, there are constant safety con-
cerns that could result in injury to employees, the
general public and damage to property.
Effective June 1, 2005, the Safety and Health
Committee announced a new incentive program.
Every six months, the accident record of each city
department will be reviewed and an award will be
given to each department that has had no safety
incidents or accidents in the previous six months.
The Safety and Health Committee expects to
have the first awards presented at a City Council
meeting in January 2006.
