The holidays are times for household decorating. While these events can bring families together and provide much fun, they can also bring unfore- seen dangers into your home. Keep in mind these simple safety tips while decorating this year: If not cared for, cut Christmas trees can be ex- plosive sources of combustibles. Maintain the tree in constant water and remove it from the home when it becomes dry when the needles begin to fall. Only use U.L. approved indoor tree lights. Lights intended for outside use create too much heat for indoor use. Keep all decorations including the tree at least three feet from ignition sources. Ignition sources are anything that produces heat, including forced air heating vents. Never use candles to decorate live, cut or artificial trees. Consider having your cut Christmas tree fire- proofed for added protection. Wintertime is time for multiple ways of heating your home. Never burn any product other than wood or pellets in a wood burning stove or fire place. Have your chimney inspected and cleaned regu- larly. Never use outdoor heating appliances inside your home. Carbon monoxide is produced and is a silent killer. The Port Townsend Fire Department stands ready to provide you with answers to any fire safety questions you may have. Do not hesitate to con- tact us at 385-2626. From all of us at the Port Townsend Fire Department we wish you a Happy and Safe Holiday Season.
