HomeMy WebLinkAbout73-002RESOLUTION NO~ 73-2 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND, WASH- INGTON, OPPOSING }lOUSE BILL 170 AND SENATE BILL 2166 OF THE 1973 SESSION OF THE WASHINGTON STATE LEGISLATURE WHICH WOULD ESTABLISH A STATE WIDE SYSTEM OF LIBRARIES T}~T WOULD REMOVE ALL LOCAL CONTROL FROM LOCAL LIBRARY UNITS. WHEREAS, House Bill 170 and Senate Bill 2166 have been introduced into the 1973 Session of the Washington State Legislature which bills would abolish municipal, rural county and regional library districts and place those districts under full State fund- ing and control with no assumption of bonded indebtedness by the State; and, WHEREAS, The City of POrt Townsend would then have to continue to provide basic library funding from local tax sources for its m~nicipal library, unless in the alternative the City were to turn over its library facilities to the State in order to get full State funding; and, WHEREAS, the citizens of the City of Port Townsend would in that event lose control of a valuable municipal asset, that is their municipal library, NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND, WASHINGTON, IN A REGULAR M~ETING DULY ASSEMBLED, DO HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: Tt~T the Mayor and the City Council of the City of Port Townsend, Washington, herewith advise all appropriate State, County and Municipal agencies and members of the Legislature of the State of Washington, of the opposition of the City of Port Townsend, Washington, to House Bill 170 and Senate Bill 2166 and urge that the~ex~$t~ng law be retained which would leave control of local l~ry~-uq~i_~s with the local municipalities involved.
