A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING
THE PORT TOWNSEND COMMUNITY GARDEN
WHEREAS: Conventional sources of energy are expensive
and in increasingly short supply, and
WHEREAS: Fruits, vegetables, flowers and other plants
are among the most efficient converters of solar
energy to useable form, and
WHEREAS: The Community Garden at the corner of San Juan
and 19th Streets is an exemplary demonstration of
the practical application of solar energy, and
WHEREAS: The Community Garden has created a useful, valuable,
and attractive area on land that was previously an
unsightly patch of weeds, and
WHEREAS: The Community Garden provides large quantit~s of
food and flowers for the Senior Nutrition Program,
the Food Bank, participants in the "Pea Patch"
program, and the general public, through sales at
moderate prices of produce excess to the needs
of the aforementioned programs, and
WHEREAS: The Community Garden is a model to the community
of the practicability of gardening with a minimum
of expensive and complicated equipment, using only-
locally available natural materials to fertilize
the soil, and to control garden pests, and
WHEREAS: The Community Garden has proved to be a valuable
educational tool for the community, both informally
by gardeners responding to inquiries of passers-by
and more formally by the conduct of on-site
workshops, and
WHEREAS: The Community Garden contains several perennial
plantings - fruit trees, raspberries, strawberries,
rhubarb, asparagus, etc. - which will provide food
in future years, and
WHEREAS: The Community Garden has provided part-time employment
for several persons, and
WHEF~AS: The Community Garden has both encouraged and provided
an opportunity for volunteer service from members
of the community,
NOW THEKEFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That the City Council of the
City of Port Townsend deems that the Community
Garden is a valuable community resource, deserving
of the admiration of the community and the support
of the City of Port Townsend in such degree and
