A resolution of the City Council of the City of Port Townsend
expressing support for the Marine Science Center.
WHEREAS the City of Port Townsend is situated at the
confluence the Strait of. Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound, and
WHEREAS the beauty and richness of this location has
served to heighten our citizens' awareness of the marine
environment, and
WHEREAS the marine environment and its resources have
provided food, not only for the tables but also t~e souls of
t~e citizens of Port Townsend, and
WHEREAS the citizens of this City recognize their
responsibility to protect and share this, their most valuable
resource, and
WHEREAS it is the children of this town who will bear
t~is guardianship in the future and must do so with a base of
knowledge and a personal familiarity, and
WHEREAS it is the Port Townsend Marine Science Society's
purpose in operating the Marine Science Center, to enhance
the scientific understanding of the marine environment and to
offer an opportunity to develop a personal awareness of this
resource, and
WHEREAS the Port Townsend Marine Science Center serves
as a bridge Between t~e marine environment and the citizens
and visitors of this town, and
WHEREAS the Port Townsend Marine Science Center receives
over 40,000 visitors per year as the only interpretive center
of the natural environment at Fort Worden State Park, now
therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED t~at: the City Council of the City of
Port Townsend, does support the Port Townsend Marine Science
Society in its request to the State of Washington, to provide
financial operational support of the Port Townsend Marine
Science Center.
