TOWNSEND AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR TO NEGOTIATE A MEMORANDUM
OF UNDERSTANDING REGARDING AN URBAN WILDLIFE CORRIDOR
WHERe%s,
The Growth Management Act has as one of its goals the
identification and preservation of wildlife corridors
within urban growth areas; and
WHEREAS,
The City is committed to preserving wetlands and drainage
corridors in the Northerly portion of the City as part of
its strategy of using natural systems for stormwater
control and the pretreatment of water entering Puget
Sound; and
WHEREAS,
The North Quimper Wildlife Corridor project recently
announced by Jefferson Land Trust has as its objective
the voluntary coordination of activities within privately
owned lands which are subject to conservation easements
held by the Land Trust, lands which may be purchased by
the Land Trust, and publicly owned lands to preserve a
wildlife corridor to maintain habitat linkages along
existing drainage systems between Middlepoint and Fort
Worden State Park; and
WHEREAS,
It is the finding of the City Council that it would be
consistent with the aforementioned goals of the Growth
Management Act and the City's stormwater strategy to
explore ways in which a wildlife corridor could be
incorporated into the natural stormwater control system
which is evolving in the Northerly portion of the City;
N O W T H E R E F O R E
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND
that it authorizes the Mayor to negotiate a memorandum of
understanding with Jefferson Land Trust and Fort Worden State Park
regarding cooperative efforts to establish a wildlife corridor in
the Northerly p~rtion of the Cit~
