A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR TO SIGN GRANT PROPOSALS FOR
OBTAINING 1996-97 FEDERAL AND STATE FUNDING TO ASSIST THE CITY IN
RECONSTRUCTING SAN JUAN AVENUE.
Whereas,
The City of Port Townsend has limited financial resources with which to upgrade arterial and
collector streets within the City;
Whereas,
The State and Federal Governments have established programs for distributing financial aid
including ISTEA (Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act), Surface Transportation
Program, Transportation Improvement Account, and Urban Arterial Trust Account;
Whereas,
San Juan Avenue is identified as having the highest priority in the 6-Year Port Townsend
Transportation Improvement Plan;
Whereas,
The School District is building a new Middle School adjoining San Juan Avenue thereby
increasing the traffic load when the school is opened in Fall 1995;
Whereas,
Whereas,
Perteet Engineering, Inc., has been retained to design improvements utilizing up to $800,000 in
budgeted funds for construction in 1995; and
The total improvements to San Juan Avenue are estimated to cost up to $1 ;6 Million and can be
constructed through two phases of improvements extending through 1996;
N O W T H E R E F O R E
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND that it authorizes the Mayor
to sign grant requests and proposals prepared by Staff seeking the remaining funds required to complete the entire
project.
