HomeMy WebLinkAboutIT Technician JD 2023 City of Port Townsend Job Description Information Technology Technician Classification title: IT Technical Support Working title: Information Technology Technician Department: Finance and Technology Services Union: Teamsters FLSA status: Non-exempt Wage Classification: 25 Hours: 40/week Effective date: June 2013; updated Nov. 2023 Reports to: Director of Finance & Technology Services Civil Service: No JOB SUMMARY Provides user support, technical assistance, and training to City users. Performs routine maintenance on computer systems and VoIP telephone systems. Installs hardware and software, diagnoses problems, and determines corrective action. Serves as first contact for users experiencing computer or phone problems. Works independently with little supervision; refers complex problems or network problems to senior employees, primarily the IT Network Administrator. Coordinates workload with IT Network Administrator. IT Network Administrator may assign work to the Information Technology Technician, as needed. This position plays a key role in maintaining network availability. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Evaluate, install, upgrade, and maintain hardware including computers, phones, switches, and other hardware. • Evaluate, install, upgrade, and maintain operating systems, office productivity software, desktop maintenance software, etc. for City PCs and all related equipment. • Assist with support of the City’s local and wide area networks (LAN/WAN) and infrastructure. Under the direction or instruction of the IT Network Administrator, may install, configure, maintain, and optimize network hardware (servers, routers, switches, and wireless devices), software and operating systems. • Maintain a help desk and provide technical support to end users. • Implement and maintain Internet and Intranet websites. • Install, configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize network security software and firewalls. • Create and modify user accounts and permissions. • Provide end user assistance with applications as needed. • Assist the Public Records Officer with public disclosure requests dealing with electronic records. • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES • Knowledge of networking and communications hardware, firmware, and operating systems software including Windows and Linux. • Basic knowledge of at least one scripting or programming language. • Basic knowledge of data structures and algorithms. • Ability to conceptualize technical concepts. IT Technician 2023 • Ability to read and interpret documents such as software documentation and various computer- programming languages. • Ability to support Active Directory, Microsoft desktop and server operating systems, Microsoft Office 365. • Knowledge of data and voice communication concepts, methods, and security issues. • Ability to install and maintain local and wide-area networks of computers. • Strong interpersonal and communications skills; capable of explaining simple procedures in writing or verbally. • Ability to work independently while focusing on project details. • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines. • Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality of all sensitive files and materials accessed, discussed, or observed while in the performance of duties. • Ability to work effectively under pressure and with frequent interruptions. QUALIFICATIONS Required • Associate degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field. • At least one year of experience in installation and maintenance of Windows-based PCs, TCP/IP networks and business telecommunication systems or an equivalent combination of education and experience to provide sufficient evidence of the successful performance of the essential elements of the job. • Must pass criminal background check. • Must have a valid Washington State driver’s license and the ability to maintain a driving record acceptable to the City’s insurance carrier. WORKING CONDITIONS • Sitting for extended periods of time while working with computer systems; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, bending at the waist and stooping, kneeling, or crouching; hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone. • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. • Physical ability to drive an automobile. • Ability to climb ladders and go on rooftops or under buildings to access cabling.
