(i.e., wheelchair seating, elevator or lift if more than one floor) Are the restroom facilities accessible? (i.e., toilet at least 17" high, grab bars) Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port Townsend community: May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and May 16 is national Youth Mental Health Action Day. The Benji Project is partnering with The Nest (a project of OWL360, www.owl360.org), PT Artscape (ptartscape.com), and the Jefferson County Fairgrounds (jeffcofairgrounds.org) to provide a unique opportunity for local youth to share their vision of mental health through art. We are co-creating MAAY: Mental health Art Action for Young people. The goal of MAAY is to support the self-expression of young people and to raise awareness of youth mental health needs in our community. Youth in Jefferson County have an acute need for mental health support. The Healthy Youth Survey from 2021 reported that 44% of 12th graders and 36% of 10th graders in our county felt so sad or hopeless for two weeks or more that they stopped doing their usual activities. The Benji Project teaches stress management and emotional resilience skills to youth in Jefferson County. We recognize the importance of art as a vehicle for expression and community connection around mental health. Guided by youth voices, we will create a large-scale art piece–which could be a puppet, or a kind of moving sculpture. We have secured instructors and a location at Jefferson County Fairgrounds where we can build and store this large artistic creation. The dates of the art-creating sessions will be: April 30, May 1, 7, 8, 11, 14, and 15. On Saturday, May 18, youth and adult participants in MAAY will be invited to walk in the Rhody Festival Grand Parade. The week of May 13, leading up to the Rhody Parade, we propose bringing the art creation, in partial or complete form, to Port Townsend High School, Blue Heron Middle School, OCEAN, The Nest, and the Jefferson Teen Center. Hundreds of students will have the opportunity to engage with the art creation, perhaps by writing a word or adding a collage item (depending on the final form of the piece). They will be encouraged to join the entry in the Parade. Explain how the City’s funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project: We project a total budget of $11,625, with $9,125 provided through in-kind donations or out of matching funds from the participating organizations. We request $2,500 in funds from the PT Arts Commission. Of that request, $500 will allow us to purchase supplies for the project, in addition to those being generously donated by PT Artscape and others. The additional $2,000 of our request will support the time of instructors and staff from The Benji Project and OWL360 to bring the art creation to schools (Port Townsend High School, Blue Heron Middle School, and OCEAN), and community venues (The Nest and Jefferson Teen Center) throughout the week of May 13-18 in honor of Youth Mental Health Action Day. If the Arts Commission is not able to fund us, the MAAY project will continue, but we will need to minimize our supply needs, potentially limiting how completely we can fulfill the vision of the teen participants. In addition, without Arts Commission funding, we would likely be unable to share the creation at schools and Jefferson Teen Center, minimizing our ability to meet and engage student populations where they are. Arts Commission funding would greatly increase the visibility and reach of the MAAY project. Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event is designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors: We are distributing flyers throughout Port Townsend, Chimacum, and Port Hadlock, as well as promoting the MAAY project on the social media accounts of the participating organizations. We have made presentations in local high school art classes, and we are offering a breakout session at the April 20 Connectivity Fair to discuss the project. On April 12, we held a pizza party launch at The Nest. We had a lively brainstorming session with 16 youth participants and four adult facilitators. We anticipate that 15-20 youth will be actively involved in the art-making sessions, and we hope to reach 200-400 more young people through tabling at Port Townsend middle and high schools, and through activities at The Nest and at Jefferson Teen Center in Chimacum. The Nest space will also have a table for the several weeks leading up to the Parade, where any teen can add their inspiration, in a word or drawing. This means that even if students do not walk in the Parade, they will see their contribution (perhaps a word on a feather, or on the side of a mask) as the Parade goes by. On Saturday, May 18, youth will be invited to walk in the Rhody Festival Grand Parade. People from across the county and beyond attend the parade, with 8,000-10,000 expected spectators. We will livestream parts of the event on Facebook. We anticipate reaching 100-600 additional people via our email and social media outreach. If this event has received Arts Commission funding in the past, please explain any proposed changes to the event and any change in the requested funding amount. The Benji Project has not received funding from the Arts Commission in the past. This project, as a collaboration between organizations, has not existed before. (i.e., toilet at least 17" high, grab bars) Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port Townsend community: Bill Evans will present three different Summer Contemporary Dance Concerts on July 14, 15, and 21. 2024. at the JFK Hall on the Fort Worden campus. They will benefit the diverse population of the greater Port Townsend community in the following ways: • The three shows will appeal to people with a wide variety of likes and interests because the contemporary dance artists involved (some of them world-class) represent a remarkable diversity of styles of contemporary dance and performance art. • The Summer Dance concerts will be celebratory, thought-provoking and engaging—opportunities for the public to see a range of artistic perspectives in dance from around the country and to contemplate the multi-faceted content of the works. • Participating dance artists will come from Jefferson and Clallam Couties, Washington, Massachusetts, Illinois, New Mexico, Texas, Kansas, California, Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina, Colorado and British Columbia. • The series will provide an opportunity for members of the local community and visitors from across the country to come together. Summer Dance I, Summer Dance II will be part of in the 10h annual Bill Evans Somatic Dance Conference and Summer Dance III will culminate the Certified Evans Teachers Gathering, both of which have attracted registrants from throughout North American and Europe. The Conference will be held at Port Worden for the second time, but the Teachers Gathering has been held at Fort Worden since 2001. • The already well-established dance audience who live in and our unique hometown and surrounding areas will have three new chances to witness the scope of an exciting American art form. Those who come from a distance will be exposed to an aspect of the vibrant Port Townsend performing arts scene. • Background information: Bill Evans, am internationally-renowned professional artist, educator and writer, became a permanent resident of Port Townsend in September, 2018. He has had an extensive impact on the global dance-world as a choreographer, performer and producer, but he came here to “retire.” At the urging of members of the local dance community, however, he has invested considerable time and wisdom in teaching choreographing and performing in Port Townsend. He has trained and featured Jefferson County dancers in his frequent performances and has supported their creative and artistic endeavors as choreographers. Additionally, he has brought guest artists from all over the continent to our doorstep. For example: In 2023, Utah’s Repertory Dance Theatre (RDT) performed Quadruple Bill, a program of Evans’ works free of charge in the Fort Worden Chapel, followed by a community class taught by Evans, free and open to the public. In May, 2023, Key City Public Theatre, presented six performances of his full-length City of Dreams, a new work for ten Jefferson County dancers, aged 36 through 65. Last July, he presented Summer Dance I, Ii and III at Fort Worden. Explain how the City’s funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project: The City’s funding would help defray the shortfall between ticket income and the cost of producing these events. • We will offer all three concerts as “pay what you can.” This is important to Evans, because he wants to make his work available to those with limited financial resources and to make these productions as accessible to the public as possible. • The direct expenses required to produce these concerts are greater than the anticipated income. The $1,000 requested from the PTAC would help to reduce that gap. • Support from the PTAC would be deeply appreciated and fully acknowledged. Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event is designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors: These events will bring visitors from across the country but will also be promoted to Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents. • The Port Townsend Leader, The Peninsula Daily News, KTPZ and Bareboards Arts and Entertainment have all supported previous Evans’ shows effectively. If PTAC funds are awarded, a follow-up press release will announce that news. Because Evans was based in Seattle in the ’70s and ‘80s, he expects that social media posts will attract some of his followers from across the Sound to visit to Port Townsend for one or more of these events. • We will market these concerts via social media to the great extent possible. • Evans has also accumulated an email list of people who have purchased tickets to his Port Townsend performances and those who have taken his community classes since 2019. All of those supporters will receive messages about these shows. • Evans will make a donation to the Madrona MindBody Institute in exchange for them publicizing these events in their upcoming online newsletter. • We will also post information about these concerts to Nextdoor email service If this event has received Arts Commission funding in the past, please explain any proposed changes to the event and any change in the requested funding amount. PTAC awarded Evans funding for three previous productions in the JFK Hall at Fort Worden. • Amidst the pandemic, in September 2021, Evans asked for and received $500. • For a weekend production in June 2022, he asked for and received $1,000. • For his Summer Dance Concerts 2023, he asked for $1,000 and received $500. • Two grants helped make “pay what you can” performances possible. The third made it possible to hire a stage manager and sound operator. • Those grants were deeply appreciated, and all attendees were aware of the support of the Port Townsend Arts Commission. These concerts will be different from past years because ALL tickets will be Pay What you Can. (i.e., toilet at least 17" high, grab bars) Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port Townsend community: Northwind Art School’s guiding principle is that art is for all of us. We believe making and sharing art promotes the well-being of individuals, community, and the world. We invite anyone and everyone to join us in learning, growing an artist’s mindset, and cultivating their art practice in a safe space. We are particularly interested in fostering a creative community within Port Townsend and East Jefferson County, and in promoting individual and community wellness by instigating learning, joy, connection, self-reflection and self-exploration. Northwind Art School’s Open Studio sessions are an opportunity for people in our community to gather in a supportive, communal space to make art. These sessions meet the needs of many different members of our community, including younger people looking to explore new skills and establish themselves in the arts community and older people wanting to stay engaged and grow their skills. Because the sessions are free and open to anyone 18 or older to attend, they are inclusive for all adult members of the community regardless of financial situation, ability, or background. We know many community members work or attend school/college, and may be coming to our campus at Fort Worden from outside Port Townsend. We will alternate Open Studio sessions on weekday evenings and weekday afternoons, to make it easier for these individuals to attend. Explain how the City’s funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project: The Open Studio sessions enable Northwind Art School to invite participants to come and make art alongside other artists in a supportive space where they are able to pursue their own work. In the past, participants have been asked to bring their own materials, and have worked on their projects without a facilitator. The school does have a small supply of donated art supplies available for participants to use, but City funding would enable the school to acquire a more comprehensive and thorough catalog of art-making materials for anyone to use during the sessions. This would enable Northwind Art to serve a larger audience of participants by lowering barriers to entry. Making the initial investment in art materials and supplies can be prohibitive for many potential artists. Having additional funds in the Open Studio budget to purchase supplies to provide directly to participants would allow us to expand our reach in the community and invite a more diverse audience to participate. The City’s funding would also allow us to hire artist facilitators to lead the Open Studio sessions. These artists act as a resource, offer feedback, and provide demonstrations and instruction to participants. Having artist facilitators lead the Open Studios would further lower the barriers to entry for community members interested in expanding or learning new skills. These facilitators help bolster attendees’ confidence and sense of discovery, and provide guidance for how they can continue to expand their artistic endeavors. Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event is designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors: While we welcome everyone, we will spread the word about our Open Studio sessions primarily to Jefferson County residents. We do this through many channels and collaborations with local media, including KPTZ community radio, the Leader, the Peninsula Daily News, and message boards including MyCityScene and Bareboards. We also promote our offerings on Facebook and Instagram and in the biweekly Northwind Art newsletter. We will hold Open Studio sessions at times when people with daytime or nighttime work schedules can join in. We will alternate the times each week: For example, the Week 1 session will be Wednesday from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. and the Week 2 session will be Wednesday from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. If this event has received Arts Commission funding in the past, please explain any proposed changes to the event and any change in the requested funding amount. (i.e., toilet at least 17" high, grab bars) Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port Townsend community: Poetry on the Salish Sea knits together people in Port Townsend and Jefferson with poetry and place. We are a start-up organization and volunteer led. Currently, we are in the process of promoting our 2024 Summer Sunday Series at Wilderbee Farm, a local farm and meadery just minutes from downtown PT. We welcome your consideration of support for our four public summer poetry events. Our volunteer staff includes approximately 18 people with deep experience in nonprofit administration, business development, law, graphic design, photography, and fundraising. 49% of participating poets in the 2023/2024 seasons identify as BIPOC, or LGBTQIA2S+, or LGBTQIA2S+ /BIPOC. Poetry on the Salish Sea (POSS) produces poetry readings dedicated to the power of poetry’s transformative influence on the human heart. Our mission is to offer an encompassing selection of outstanding poets from around the Salish Sea and beyond; present a spectrum of emerging and seasoned poets; consistently include voices from historically marginalized communities; and deepen our audience members' engagement with poetry. Our inaugural season (summer 2023) introduced 18 poets to more than 500 patrons at six poetry readings (average: 80 people per reading), a remarkable turnout for local poetry events. Our first event of 2024, on Valentine’s Day, at the Chapel at Fort Worden, featured 14 poets and attracted an enthusiastic audience of more than 120 youth and adults. Events are free and open to all. Port Townsend and Jefferson County have a long, celebrated literary legacy as home to poets, literary presses, writers’ workshops, and publishers. POSS is designed to ensure that poetry remains central to the cultural and literary life of rural communities on the Olympic Peninsula. Four readings at Wilderbee Farm will connect audience members to the natural abundance and beauty of the Salish Sea region and to some of the most exciting contemporary poetry from around the Pacific NW and beyond. Remarkable poets such as Cedar Sigo, Heather McHugh, Kay Ryan, Rick Barot, Spencer Reece, Melissa Kwasny, Luther Hughes, and Washington State Poet Laureate Arianne True are among the summer 2024 poets, and include two Pulitzer prize winners, a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award” recipient, and a former two-time U.S. Poet Laureate, who will read alongside our top-notch emerging poets. Explain how the City’s funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project: The City’s funding would support POSS productions in three key ways: 1) by paying a professional sound technician to provide high-quality sound for our outdoor readings ($600./4 readings @ $150 each); 2) by boosting our marketing efforts with posters, flyers, programs, and postcards ($400.); and by underwriting honorariums for literary artists ($600./3 @ $200 each). The City’s support will improve our project by allowing us to hire an experienced, professional sound technician with sound equipment, essential for outdoor readings; increasing our outreach with print pieces we can distribute at the readings and in the community; and enabling us to pay our June literary artists while we continue with fundraising. Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event is designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors: Our marketing and promotional activities are designed to target residents of Port Townsend and Jefferson County and the Salish Sea bioregion with social media (Instagram, FB), print (PT Leader and PDN), posters, flyers, radio (donated sponsorship by KPTZ), movie adverts (Rose Theatre), websites (POSS and Wilderbee), promotion by our community sponsors in PT (Imprint Bookstore, The Production Alliance, Wilderbee Farm, Centrum Writing Programs) and in Seattle (Elliott Bay Books), and word of mouth. We have charted and honed what worked for us (and what didn’t) in 2023 and are investing our time/resources in ways that reach prospective audiences most effectively and with the greatest impact. If this event has received Arts Commission funding in the past, please explain any proposed changes to the event and any change in the requested funding amount. The biggest change in our series and budget request is that we are paying our literary artists an honorarium in 2024. Last year poets received a jar of honey for participating in POSS; in 2024 we want to acknowledge their efforts with a cash honorarium, relatively rare for literary artists. We are asking as well for support for the professional audio technician and for marketing and promotion, as we did last year. (We were awarded $770 for both a sound technician and marketing in 2023.) We are a start-up organization and are developing additional funding sources and sponsorships for 2024; we ask that the Arts Commission continue to help us create a solid foundation for our emerging organization with your support for another year. Please attach the proposed budget for this event. Thank you for considering our request.
