Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port
Townsend community:
My drum teacher, Bolokada Moussa Conde, was born in Guinea West Africa and was raised in a
small village called Morowaya. I was fortunate to spend a month with him and his family in
Conakry, which is the capital of Guinea. Bolokada has toured all over the world and presently
splits his time in South Carolina and Guinea. We now have the exciting opportunity to bring him to
Jefferson County at the end of October 2023.
Our rural community could greatly benefit from people coming and sharing their life experiences
from across the world. Even though we live in an age of technology where it's easy to see far away
people and places, having someone here in person and relating in a very personal way can bring
deeper connection to a very different culture. Bolokada is passionate about sharing his vast
knowledge of traditional rhythms of Guinea, as well as stories about the cultural context of those
rhythms.
Guinea is a very poor country and often lacks enough food, clean water, medical access,
electricity, and sanitation. Many children die of preventable diseases. Bolokada has lost children
of his own. At the same time, Guinea is rich in tradition, especially music. Bolokada, from an early
age, was drawn to playing drums. As a kid, he played on anything until he finally received his first
djembe. Bolokada excelled and became the lead djembe player for Les Percussions de Guinea for
over a decade. He has done extensive workshops here in the states as well as residencies at
universities.
When Bolokada is back in Guinea he has teamed with people in the U.S. to build a medical clinic
that specializes in childbirth. He has drilled two wells in his hometown as well as built a bridge
that separates a neighboring village to aid in commerce. He is presently working on getting solar
panels to meet some of the medical clinic’s needs.
Not only is Bolokada a world class djembe player, but he is also a great humanitarian. He is a kind,
caring, dynamic person who can relate to people of all backgrounds and ethnicities. Having
Bolokada come to our community to share his music and his stories will help us bridge cultural
divides. This will be a rare opportunity for Jefferson County residents to learn from a master of a
unique art form.
Explain how the City’s funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City
funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project:
It is essential to locate additional funding to make this happen. The total estimated cost of
Bolokada’s visit is $4,458.77. This includes his plane fare, rental space, advertising costs, and
professional fees. I am providing him with food and lodging, and am hoping to get some
reimbursement for these costs.
Bolokada is scheduled to arrive Monday, October 30, and leaves Monday, November 6. He plans
to visit Port Townsend schools, Tuesday through Friday. The details are not yet finalized but will
include at least two assemblies. So far, the district is only able to commit $500. We are also
hoping to obtain support from the Port Townsend Education Fund, but less funding is available
from them than has been provided in the past. Any PTEF money would not be awarded until
October, when plans already need to be in place.
Bolokada will be offering private lessons during the week, and with support from the Arts
Commission, we could provide scholarships for youth or adults unable to afford the price of a
lesson. Saturday and Sunday will be the days for drum workshops for the wider community.
Bolokada will be teaching two 90 minute classes each day, one a beginning and the other being
an intermediate/advanced class. The plan is to rent the Chimacum grange which costs $100 each
day plus event insurance. Arts Commission funding would also allow low income individuals or
families to participate in the weekend workshops at a reduced or free cost.
One possibility is to have a benefit concert either Saturday or Sunday evening for Bolokada’s
medical clinic in Morowaya, which is in need of a security fence, more solar panels, and medical
supplies. Bolokada has fellow drummer friends in Seattle from Guinea who could come over to
play traditional music! Arts Commission funding would make this event possible.
Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event
is designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors:
We plan to advertise in many different ways. We have had a West African Dance class taught by
Rae Kala with live drummers for several years (with a hiatus during the pandemic) which has seen
a lot of interest in the community. There is also a growing interest in hand drumming in our
community. Reaching out through word of mouth and social media platforms should generate a
lot of interest. Also, Seattle has a vibrant drum and dance scene that overlaps through friendships
with the local scene here. Since Bolokada is known as a master djembe player this will attract
people outside Jefferson County.
I have emailed Robert Ambrose of KPTZ who hosts Rhythm Connection who is interested in
interviewing Bolokada. This should generate interest, as well. We plan on advertising through
KPTZ community announcements as well as reaching out to The Leader. I am looking for
someone with advertising and graphic design skills to create flyers.
In short, because this is such a personal passion of mine to get my teacher here, there will be a lot
of energy in getting the word out!
If this event has received Arts Commission funding in the past, please explain any proposed
changes to the event and any change in the requested funding amount. N/A
