If yes, please attach a copy of the assessment report or complete the Venue Accessibility

opened with closed fist and not too heavily weighted)

Are the restroom facilities accessible? (i.e., toilet at least 17" high, grab bars)
Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port
Townsend community:
Every day we get closer to a generation who cannot understand history and bridge the gaps in our
past and present to cultivate a new way for the future. The literal understanding of history via
cursive handwriting and calligraphic expression is threatened with extinction. The costs of speed
addiction are costing us our mental health. Teaching calligraphic fine art paired with poetry and
letter writing is a saving balm for our future generations. The art of slow is a way of life, a life of
poetry. Offering calligraphy free to school-aged youth is the key to keeping the art alive, and
allows for a diverse population to learn an art form our current culture reserves for the affluent.
The project has the potential to engage the youth in a slow connected art form while also
connecting with others far away through the epistolary aspect it will bring. Letter writing is when
poetry and calligraphy have fallen in love.
Explain how the City’s funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City
funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project:
The City's funding is integral to this incarnation of the project. As with Pick-Up Poetry, the PTAC
grant supported the project to get off its feet and into the world. The kind of artist I am is one in
service to the youth of the world. This project will likely move forward regardless of any funding,
because I am dedicated to this mission. Though, I believe deeply in artists being paid for their
service to the world.
Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event
is designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors:
The event will target local youth. Nurturing the residents of Port Townsend and east Jefferson
first, but there are ideas to collaborate with schools far and wide with calligraphers on the other
side of the country or wold with letter writing! Our teens and pre-teens need more art and art from
the days of yore so they can integrate it into their brilliant future-making genius. I believe in this
generation.
If this event has received Arts Commission funding in the past, please explain any proposed
changes to the event and any change in the requested funding amount.
This program is an offspring of a former PTAC sponsored event Pick-Up Poetry. The collaborators
and students asked for calligraphy as a spin-off. While this specific event has not been funded by
the PTAC, the founder has received funding for the on-going & very successful program (Pick-Up
Poetry).

Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port
Townsend community:
With Port Townsend Arts Commission support we offer free, weekly live music, April-October at
the Port Townsend Farmers Market. We provide a diversity of live music from the Port Townsend
Highschool band to a cappell by local coral groups, bluegrass, folk, and so much more. With
attention towards featuring musicians who come from diverse backgrounds we are able to
engage shopper with soul nourishing musical experiences in the heart of Uptown Port Townsend.
We attract as many as 2,500 shoppers-- mostly local-- during the summer months. Our shopper
base includes people of all ages and backgrounds.
Explain how the City’s funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City
funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project:
The Jefferson County Farmers Markets brough back free live music last season both to our Port
Townsend and Chimacum Farmers Market. The Port Townsend Arts Commission was one of the
partners that made free, live music at our Port Townsend Farmers Market possible. Thank you!
We provide a stipend to performing musicians. This is funded through community sponsorships
and at the Chimacum Farmers Market is supported by Jefferson County Lodging Tax funds.
Without support including that of the Port Townsend Arts Commissions we would not be able to
offer live music at our market or would rely exclusively on buskers reducing the quality and
diversity of the offering. With your support, we will book quality local and regional musicians
representing a diversity of musical styles and backgrounds.
Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event
is designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors:
We have a consistent local shopper based build over the last 31 years of operating out Port
Townsend Farmers Market. Live music is one of the things that bring local and regional shoppers
t our markets week after week. We advertise live music throughout the season via our weekly
newsletter, social media, KPTZ and website.
If this event has received Arts Commission funding in the past, please explain any proposed
changes to the event and any change in the requested funding amount.
We are requesting the same funding amount as in past years. Other business sponsors of our live
music program generally are contributing at a higher level. We recognize your budget constraints
and would love your participation in brining our community free weekly concerts in Uptown Port
Townsend. Thank you for your consideration! We greatly appreciate your support and partnership
building an artful community.

Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port
Townsend community:
As our county’s only non-commercial, publicly accessible art museum where artists can present
their work for public engagement and educational purposes rather than sale of artwork, we
believe we have the twofold responsibility of showcasing local artists and making enriching art
exhibitions accessible to our community. Beginning April 2023, we will have three exhibitions on
view at the Jefferson Museum—all inspired by our region’s land and seascapes and featuring
exclusively work by local artists.
While two of these exhibitions will be opening in March, one featuring the work of Port Hadlock-
based sculptor David Eisenhour will be opening in April. Our $1,500 request is intended to support
direct costs of installing and marketing Eisenhour’s exhibition as well as speaker honoraria for a
public program in April that will highlight connections between the three landscape exhibitions.
While most of the expenses associated with these exhibitions will be incurred between February
and April, two of the three will be on view through August 2023, giving our local community five
opportunities (4/1, 5/6, 6/3, 7/1, 8/5) to visit them during a first Saturday with free admission and
extended hours (where our museum is open until 7:00 PM instead of our usual 4:00 PM). Outside
of our free admission dates, the public will also be able to visit the exhibition any other time our
museum is open (11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Thursday through Saturday), with regular museum
admission rates in effect.
Providing opportunities for our community to access engaging arts experiences for free is
extremely important to us and it’s a benefit that our community took advantage of in 2022. Our
average admissions for first Saturdays last year (~120) was more than triple our overall average
for daily admissions (~37). On two other occasions where we had special free all-ages
programming at the museum in 2022, we saw an even higher daily visitation average of over 190.
Our visitors during waived admission days—especially outside of our busiest summer months—
are overwhelmingly local. They and the local artists whose work we present are, by design, the
most significant beneficiaries of our waived admission and free programming days at the
museum. Based on last year’s averages for visitation during waived admission days, we anticipate
anywhere between 600 and 950 museum visitors will have the opportunity to see the three land
and seascape-inspired exhibitions at the Jefferson Museum for free. Based on last year’s overall
admission data, as many as 3,400 total museum visitors may see the work of at least 10 local
artists between April and August.
Explain how the City’s funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City
funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project:
MATERIALS & SUPPLIES
The smallest component of our request is intended to support materials and supplies for the
installation of Eisenhour’s work in March ahead of the exhibition opening in time for the first
Saturday of April. The $150 for installation supplies will likely fund special hardware to secure
Eisenhour’s work against damage and theft, as some of his sculpted 3D pieces are small and
fragile. The $250 portion for wall vinyl is consistent with this expense for most exhibitions at the
Jefferson Museum.
MARKETING
As outlined in the budget document submitted with these responses, $350 of this $500
component will support our largest marketing expense associated with exhibitions—a postcard
mailing with a distribution of about 980 recipients. Around 85% of the addresses receiving JCHS
exhibition postcards have Jefferson, Clallam, Kitsap, or Pierce County ZIP codes. Over 65% of
recipients have Port Townsend ZIP codes specifically, making it one of the most effective ways
we get the word out about new exhibitions to our local community. The 500+ postcards left over
after the bulk mailing will be available at the museum for visitors to take away. JCHS will also
offer all artists whose work is on view postcards to share with their own contacts. The remaining
$150 of this marketing component will offset the cost of print advertising in the Port Townsend
Leader. The Leader has donated special discounted advertising bundles to JCHS in the past and
we would leverage any support from the City for this aspect of the marketing budget to secure a
high-visibility combination of print and digital advertising in the runup to the public program in
April.
PROGRAM HONORARIA
This final $600 component of our request will fund up to three honoraria for our April program
highlighting the artists and work on view as part of the three landscape exhibitions. This program
may bring together some of the artists with work on view for a moderated discussion about their
processes and the influence of our region on their artistic practice. This component is both the
largest and most important item in our budget, as we believe it’s essential to make sure working
artists are paid equitably for their time and labor.
PTAC FUNDING IMPACT
Without City funding, JCHS will have to assume all the expenses in this request. Each component
of our budget is consistent with the direct costs of bringing a new exhibition into our museum,
marketing it to our local community, and compensating artists for their time. These costs,
however, add up as we present several exhibitions throughout the year. Last year, for example, we
presented nine exhibitions throughout the year. The City’s support for these 2023 exhibitions—all
regionally-inspired and featuring local artists—will help ensure that we can meet our community’s
appetite for a variety of museum offerings throughout the year. It will also signal the City’s
commitment to ensuring the Jefferson Museum is a dynamic and inspiring resource for both
visitors and members of our local artistic community.
Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event
is designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors:
As previously described in our response to how this exhibition will benefit and consider the
diverse population of the greater community, we know that our first Saturdays at the museum
attract a particularly large contingent of Port Townsend and East Jefferson County residents. The
extended first Saturday hours for every month affords those who live nearby multiple chances to
visit the museum for free. It also gives them multiple opportunities to see the work of several
fantastic local artists on view in gallery spaces throughout the museum. As for our exhibition
programs, we know that East Jefferson County residents have also made up the majority of that
audience over the past two years. That has been the case even when we have expanded program
access to people outside our region with a livestream option.
Our exhibitions, first Saturday hours, and public programs are routinely publicized through our
website, digital communications, and postcard mailings (refer to explanation for MARKETING
component of our budget in the previous response for geographic breakdown of postcard
distribution). If JCHS is able to secure discounted paid advertising with the Port Townsend
Leader, this exhibition may receive additional publicity targeting Port Townsend and East
Jefferson residents through that source.
If this event has received Arts Commission funding in the past, please explain any proposed
changes to the event and any change in the requested funding amount. N/A

Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port
Townsend community:
The whole community will benefit by our bringing Student Art, photography, multi-media and
creative writing to people of all ages and getting students to interact and connect with the entire
community.
Explain how the City’s funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City
funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project:
The Cotton Building has been identified as the best venue for us to draw students and public
together. The City's funding will help us bring student work to the larger community, and teach
them how to prepare and present art work to a larger audience.
Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event
is designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors:
We hope to even better our 160 visitors and participants from last year! The whole purpose is to
bring the community together and bring the generations together.
We will make fliers, use social media, School District Phone tree, Superintendent Newsletter, local
arts organizations, newspaper, and students. Through involved teachers, students will have
motivation to join the fun!
If this event has received Arts Commission funding in the past, please explain any proposed
changes to the event and any change in the requested funding amount.
We are building this as a yearly project with specific themes to encourage student photography,
multi-media, art, and written and spoken word poetry. The only change from last year is we know
better what we are doing, and hope to expand our audience.

Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port
Townsend community:
PT Swing Outs has been working for the past year to bring more swing dancing opportunities to
the Port Townsend Community. We have made most of our events free or pay-what-you-can, in
order to make them as accessible and inclusive as possible.
Our event, Swingin’ by the Sound, is the first of what will hopefully become an annual early spring
event. It is a weekend workshop of classes in a traditional swing dance called Collegiate Shag,
with social dances in the evening to authentic 30s and 40s live music. Our Friday night dance will
be a pay-what-you-can community-focused dance that also offers a beginner Collegiate Shag
class to introduce the community to the dance style and the music.
Our goal is to bring swing dancing opportunities and classes to our community, to engage them in
this historically important dance and musical tradition. We have put together a diverse team of
instructors and musicians from all around the United States to create the best and most
educational possible experience for our local community. Dancing creates joy, it connects us with
our bodies, with one another, and with beautiful music. Dancing supports our mental, physical,
and social health, and brings us closer together as a community.
Explain how the City’s funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City
funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project:
The event is unlikely to draw quite enough participants in its first year to cover its costs. With
funding from the city we can pay for the remainder of direct costs and be sure of holding the
event. Without funding from the City, these costs will either have to be paid out of pocket by the
three primary organizers, and if this is not possible (which is likely) then the event will have to be
postponed until 2024. We hope that by hosting the first instance of the event here in Port
Townsend, we will build momentum with the event and it will be able to grow each year to cover
and exceed its costs.
Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event
is designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors:
Swingin’ by the Sound aims to directly benefit residents of the tri-counties and bring visitors to our
lovely seaside town. By offering a pay-what-you-can taster class and live music social dance, we
provide our residents with the opportunity to explore this historical dance and musical tradition.
We are using social media, flyers, and word of mouth to actively market the event locally,
regionally, and nationally. Our teachers and musicians have followings in the swing dance
community all around the country, and are working to bring dancers to attend the event from
scenes in Chicago, Austin, and Los Angeles. Bringing these more experienced visiting dancers will
give our locals access to higher level dancing and will connect them with dance communities
around the country. Having our weekend of dancing and workshops downtown will bring business
to local hotels and downtown businesses, and as we grow our event we will be able to work
directly with local downtown hotels to host dancers. Swingin’ by the Sound aims to bring visiting
dancers who may not otherwise find their way to Port Townsend to experience our town and
connect with local dancers.
If this event has received Arts Commission funding in the past, please explain any proposed
changes to the event and any change in the requested funding amount.
Our event and organization has not previously applied for or received Arts Commission funding.

event receiving funding must be held in an accessible venue, and accessibility and any
inaccessible aspects of a venue be noted in the publicity for each event.
"

Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port
Townsend community:
Kozmopolis Theater Project (KTP). is committed to a post-pandemic rejuvenation our City's only
true "black box" theater as a vital "workshop" component of a thriving larger Port Townsend
theatre arts community. KTP plans to develop ongoing reader's theater and process theater
programs to foster amateur performances of contemporary and original monologues and one-act
plays that address the aspirations of diverse individuals and peoples for world community.
Explain how the City’s funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City
funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project:
The City's funding of this project will allow KTP to meet the Chameleon Theatre's rent rate
schedule for 9 workshop-rehearsals and 2 weekend performances of a production of "Voices of
Ukraine" in conjunction with the Center for International Theatre's "Worldwide Readings of
Ukrainian Plays" program. It will also provide for event promotion and necessary tech support.
The project could still be done without City funding, but KTP would need donated space for
rehearsal and performance and would not be able to provide synergistic support for the
Chameleon Theatre.
Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event
is designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors:
These workshop rehearsals and performances will be announced in the Leader and in flyers to
invite participants and supporters throughout the project. The proposed project is a pilot-workshop
program targeting larger, more public productions of "Voices of Ukraine" that KTP is planning to
stage in September. KTP envisions the City of Port Townsend as a festival-destination arts
community capable of hosting a live theatre festival. The black box space of the Chameleon
Theatre can provide an essential incubator for youth and the entire community to find and their
theatrical talents. As such, it could be an integral component--in conjunction with Key City Theatre
and the possibility of a Centrum theater arts space--of our City's live theater infrastructure.
If this event has received Arts Commission funding in the past, please explain any proposed
changes to the event and any change in the requested funding amount. None

Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port
Townsend community:
As a relatively new community-based theatre company, our core mission is to offer opportunities
for local non-professional actors, designers and directors to create meaningful, relevant, and
engaging live theatre for local audiences. In our inaugural production (Shakespeare’s As You Like
It, summer 2022), our cast ranged in age from 16 to 72; over 30 Jefferson County actors,
designers and volunteers were directly involved in the production. Our entire cast and production
team were locals (one actor commuted from Bainbridge).
Our Spring 2023 production is an attempt to further broaden our appeal for Jefferson County
audiences, with a more contemporary ensemble cast play performed in an intimate setting, as a
contrast to our large summer outdoor Shakespeare productions.
If we are able to perform in our intended venue of the Finnriver Haybarn, this will help bring live
theatre to a more diverse audience in a more informal setting, with very affordable ticket prices.
Performing in Chimacum offers access to south county residents, who have few opportunities to
see live theatre close to home.
Explain how the City’s funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City
funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project:
As a new theatre company, having even modest “seed money” funding helps us cover up front
production costs. Theatre companies have significant cash flow challenges, with all the income
from a production coming in at the very end of the project. And as a brand-new company, we have
limited resources for new production startup costs.
Our goal for this grant request is twofold: to offset all or most of the royalty costs for performing a
newer play requiring royalty payment, and to cover some of our rehearsal space and venue rental
costs. We want to finish this smaller production on solid financial footing to then mount our
mainstage summer production of Taming of the Shrew, so it’s important that we not “go in the
hole” on a spring production.
Receiving this grant will allow us to produce a play needing royalty payments which must be paid
prior to the production(rather than an older work in the Public Domain such as Shakespeare).
Being able to do this supports living playwrights, builds broader audience engagement for newer
works, and expands our theatre experiences to appeal to a wider range of local audiences.
Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event
is designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors:
The project audience will be primarily Port Townsend & East Jefferson County Residents.
Marketing and outreach will be local, using local community outreach resources such as
community bulletin boards and BareBoards and Finnriver’s arts calendar email lists.
Our planned performance dates coincide with the Rhododendron Festival, offering another locals-
focused event for evenings during Rhody weekend.
If this event has received Arts Commission funding in the past, please explain any proposed
changes to the event and any change in the requested funding amount.
N/A. This is a new event and new organization and has not received Arts commission funding in
the past.
