Officers are elected annually in May. Jennifer Rotermund nominated Debbie Janke to chair for another year. Shawn Koomen 2nd nomination. Shawn Koomen offered his name as co-chair and John Nowak 2nd the nomination and the new officers were duly elected. B. Alex reported on impacts of COVID on PRCS department C. Alex gave an update on staffing and current coverage for maintenance and recreation. D. Alex reported that the next Tree City application is due soon. Debbie Janke suggested a proclamation be given to Council in October to recognize Arbor Day and noted that there is no requirement host an Arbor Day event in 2020 due to COVID. Debbie Janke will draft the proclamation and send to board for comment prior to submitting. E. Alex gave a synopsis/recap of the Golf Course process, Council direction and the resulting RFP process underway as well as the community engagement attempts that will be upcoming. Aquatic Program Supervisor resigned on 9/10/2020 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and WHEREAS, this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska; and Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and WHEREAS, in these challenging pandemic times, our urban forests, parks and trails provide open space to find solace and hope, where we can be safe and socially distanced; and WHEREAS, trees are a source of carbon mitigation. Trees buffer our carbon footprint. They store carbon on timescales relevant to climate change. We need them at least as much as they need us; and WHEREAS, autumn is the recommended time to plant trees in our climate and the Governor has declared the month of October to be Urban and Community Forestry Month; and WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife; and WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our hearths, and countless other wood products; and WHEREAS, trees in our city beautify our community; enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and increase property values, and WHEREAS, trees wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal. NOW, THEREFORE, I xxxx, Mayor of the City of Port Townsend, do hereby proclaim October xx, 2020 as Arbor Day and urge all citizens to plant trees to gladden the heart and promote the well-being of this and future generations. ________________________ xxxx, Mayor Date
