We have a new mayor, new commiee assignments, a strategic retreat has concluded and I’ve been here three months. Now’s the me to really put our hearts into it and deliver on our 2020 aspiraons. Delivering great outcomes requires all of us. I’d like to thank those who have helped me beer understand our unique community by taking the me to reach out, provide some clear feedback or offer a hand. It’s really helped me get a handle on key issues and important (and diverse!) opinions. Many of you have come by for a Friday “coffee with the City Manager,” which I’ve done now for eight consecuve weeks. We’ve covered a wide range of topics at those sessions. For instance: • Housing – How can we work together to provide real choices of all dwelling types and affordability levels? • Transportaon – How do we create more parking? Less parking? Why are our bike lanes so good? Why don’t we have beer ones? • Pool – Why can’t we build something now? (And) Why can’t we wait so we get it right? • Climate change – Why aren’t we moving faster to protect our infrastructure and communies? • Smoking – How can we help reduce exposure to second-hand smoke in public places? • Deer – How can we protect them? (And) How can we harvest them? • Golf – How do we aract more golfing? (And) Is there a beer use for that city-owned land? • Mill – How do we invest in our water system and what’s the mill’s role? • Parks – How do we keep our parks in good shape as we grow and connect the network? • Sewer ouall – What can we do to make sure our wastewater is clean and we protect our marine ecosystems? • Heritage – How do we best protect our historic and marime heritage while we adapt and change? Of course there are so many more topics that have come up – but you get the picture. Luckily, over this year we’ll take on many of these issues. While many are disnct projects, most are complicated. To me, they fit in a wider package of strategic decisions that should be considered together. The real work is connecng the dots and making sure each important decision links to others and gets us to where we aspire to be in the long term. It’s my aim that we do this tough work together as much as we can, and we do it with transparency, efficiency, honesty, respect, empathy and creavity. I’m out of town a Friday or two this month, so I’ll pick up my coffee meengs in March at Sunrise Coffee (308 10th St), from 9:00-10:30 a.m. each Friday. Hope to see you there.
