HomeMy WebLinkAboutPort Townsend School District - Salish Coast Elementary Pilot Project continued 2020Continued Pilot Project for 2020 between Salish Coast Elementary School and the City of Port Townsend Public Library Pursuant to the April 18, 2014 Memorandum of Agreement Introduction: The City of Port Townsend Public Library (Library) and the Port Townsend School District (School) have mutual goals to create a strong education community through collaborative partnerships as described by the April 18, 2014 Memorandum of Agreement (Agreement). The Agreement demonstrates the shared desire to align both organization's strategic visions and goals through furthering their activities together. This Scope of Work implements and incorporates the terms and conditions of the Agreement. Aligning strategic visions: The City of Port Townsend's vision for 2019-2022 is to create "a thriving community for all," with a mission to, "Champion aspirations for a thriving community as envisioned in our Comprehensive Plan." Focus Area: Communitv Qualltvof Life The City will build a small-town quality of life for all ages that ensures equitable access to amenities and provides for community resilience and self-reliance. The City will foster a strong education community culture. Strategy 1: Enhance quality of life for youth. Work with local educational institutions and other groups and organizations to provide youth development programs that connect youth to our community and area resources. Action Item: Connect youth to educational and recreational opportunities and internships for local youth. Develop a connection with schools to promote internships at Library, Police, Parks, Public Works, Finance, to connect schools and youth to broader community opportunities. The Port Townsend School District's vision for 2017-2021 is "The future we seek to create," with the mission: "Through community focused maritime place -based projects, students develop effective thinking, effective action, and effective relationships. As a result, our students demonstrate meaningful accomplishments as engaged citizens." Goal 3: Community Engagement Build a connected learning community, engaging families, partners and the greater community to meet the needs of all students. Through maritime and place -based projects, develop and support students in successful pursuits as engaged citizens. 3.2 Objective: Extend ways the district serves as the hub of the community. 3.2.1 Objective: Develop on-site community resources in new elementary 3.2.2 Objective: Develop and implement plans for collaborative district and Port Townsend Public Library in new elementary. Scope of Work: Both parties wish to further their collaborative library work by continuing our pilot project of having a public library component at Salish Coast Elementary School library that has demonstrated an increase in equitable access to library services and promoting lifelong literacy. This continuation of the pilot project program will establish projects for Winter/Spring 2020, Summer 2020, and Fall 2020. The program's focus is bringing children and their families together in the Salish Coast Library and promoting a lifelong love of reading through the City Library's Summer Reading Program. The program will expand access to the Salish Coast Elementary Library after school during the school year. Winter/ Spring and Fall After School Project: The Salish Coast Library will open on Wednesdays after school from 1:00pm-3:00pm from start of the 2020 school year through to winter break in December 2020. The Library and School staff may offer programming for school age children as well. This will be called Salish After Hours. Summer 2020 Project: The Salish Coast Library will be open to children and their families on Tuesdays 10am-fpm from June 23, 2020 through August 4, 2020 (dates may vary slightly). The City Library will temporarily move its Preschool Storytime from the Carnegie Library to Salish Coast Elementary for the summer to increase/expand access and awareness to the collaboration between the School and City libraries. This will be called Summer @ Salish. Description of storytime: Preschool Storytime: Tuesdays, 10:15am-10:45am Caregivers and kids age 36 months — 5 years enjoy stories, songs, and hands-on activities while building early literacy skills and preparing for school. Every child can get ready to read at the library! City's responsibilities: • Provide one City Library Employee for each session in the summer and after school in the fall • Conduct weekly preschool story time during the summer months via a professional librarian or library associate School's Responsibilities • Provide one School District Employee for each session in the summer and after school in the fall • Provide operational expenses for the school library including electricity and custodial services Evaluations: A committee of School and Library leaders create metrics to evaluate the Library Collaboration at the Salish Coast Elementary Library. The committee will evaluate each season of the program. The School Board, City Council, and Library Advisory Boards will be updated about the progress of the continuation pilot project for the year 2020. Additional Collaborations and Resources: The School will offer afterschool access to the Commons and Eagle Room for all ages and adult library programs free of charge to the Library. Access to the Commons and Eagle Room needs to be scheduled following the School's reservation procedures and is subject to availability. Programs may include author talks, workshops, and classes provided by the Library or in partnership with the School. All programs will be free and open to the public.
