HEADLINE
Notice of Temporary Testing of Drinking Water
Within the next few days, you may notice an increased chlorine taste and/or smell in the City’s drinking
water.
As recommended by the Washington State Department of Health, the City of Port Townsend is
conducting a study to confirm the effectiveness of the baffle design in our reservoirs. Baffles in our
water storage tanks help to provide the required contact time for the disinfecting agent (chlorine). On
Monday, September 17, the City temporarily increased the chlorine dosage by 75% and is monitoring
the chlorine residual to see how long it takes for water to pass through the reservoirs. The temporary
increase in chlorine residual is within the normal range for water treatment disinfection. It is expected
that chlorine levels at customer taps will be back to our usual range within 7 to 10 days.
If you have any questions, please call the City of Port Townsend’s Department of Water Quality at (360)
379-5001.
