Figure 1) in the lnlet of the Sprinkler. The glass Bulb contains a fluid that expands when ex- posed to heat. When the rated tem- perature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass Bulb, and the Bulb Seat is released. The compressed Spring is then able to ex- pand and push the Water Tube as well as the Guide Tube outward. This action simultaneously pulls inward on the Yoke, withdrawing the Plug & Belleville Seal from the lnlet allowing the sprin- kler to activate and flow water. Design Griteria The Series DS-1 Sprinklers are in- tended lor use in fire sprinkler systems designed in accordance with the standard installation rules recognized by the applicable Listing or Approval agency (e.9., UL Listing is based on NFPA 13 requirements). The Series DS-1 Dry Type Sprinkler is to be installed in the 1 inch NPT outlet or run of malleable or ductile iron threaded tee fittings that meet the di- mensional requirements of ANSI B16.3 (Class 150) or cast iron threaded tee littings that meet the di- mensional requirements of ANSI 816.4 (Class 125) with the end sprin- kler fitting on a branch line to be plugged as shown in Figures 3 - 11. When installing 1 inch NPT Series DS-1 Dry Type Sprinklers on a dry pipe sprinkler system, only use the side outlet ol maximum 2-112 inch size re- ducing tee's. For wet pipe sprinkler systems, the Series DS-1 Dry Type Sprinklers may also be installed in the 1 inch NPT outlet of a Central Figure 730 Me- chanical Tee or the following Tyco Fire Products CPVC fittings: (P/N 80145) NPT Female Adapter or (P/N 80249) 1" x 'l " x'l " NPT Sprinkler Head Adapter Tee. NOTE Do not instalt the Series DS-l into any other type fitting without first consult- ing the Technical Services Depart- ment. Branch, cross, and leedmain piping connected to Dry Sprinklers and sub- ject to freezing temperatures must be pitched for drainage in accordance with the minimum requirements of the National Fire Protection Association for dry pipe sprinkler systems. When Dry Sprinklers are to be used in wet pipe sprinkler systems protecting areas subject to freezing temperatures (e.9., sprinkler drops into freezers), consideration must be given to the ap- propriate length ol the sprinkler that will prevent freezing ol the water in the connecting pipes due to conduction. When the temperature surrounding the wet pipe sprinkler system is main- tained at a minimum temperature of 40'Fl4'C, the lollowing are the mini- mum recommended lengths between the face ol the sprinkler fitting and the outside surface ol the protected area (i.e., length exposed to minimum am- bient of 40'F/4"C): . 12 inches (300 mm) when the tem- perature within the protected area is -20'F/-29'C . 18 inches (450 mm) when the tem- perature within the protected area is -40'F/-40'C r 24 inches (600 mm) when the tem- perature within the protected area is -60'F/-51"C For protected area temperatures be- tween those given above, the minimum recommended length from the face of the fitting to the outside ol the pro- tected area may be determined by in- terpolating between the indicated val- ues. NOTE When Dry Sprinklers penetrate a ceil- ing or wall into an area subject to freez- ing, the clearance space around the Sprinkler Casing must be completely sealed in order to prevent the leakage of moist air inta the freezing area which might result in the formation of condensate around the Frame, Deflec- tor, Bulb Seat, or Bulb. Failure to pre- vent Ihe formation of condensate could result in the build-up of ice around the releasing components. This could re- sult an inadvertent operation of the sprinkler or impaired operation due to reduced thermal sensitivity. Installation The Series DS-1 Dry Type Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the lollowing instructions: NOIES The Series DS-l must only be installed in fittings that meet the requirements of the Design Criteria section. Refer to the Design Criteria section for other important requirements regard- ing piping design and sealing of the clearance space around the Sprinkler Casing. Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprinkler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1 ,6 mm) for the 135"F/57"C rating to 1/8 inch (3,2 mm) for the 286"F/141'C rating. A leak tight 1 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained with a torque of 20 to 30 ft.lbs. (26,8 to 40,2 Nm). Higher levels of torque may distort the sprin- kler inlet with consequent leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to compensate for in- sufficient adjustment in an Escutcheon Plate by under- or over-tightening the Sprinkler. Beadjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. Step 1. Pendent sprinklers must be installed only in the pendent position, and upright sprinklers must be in- stalled only in the upright position. The deflector of a pendent or upright sprin- kler is to be parallel to the ceiling. Horizontal sidewall sprinklers are to be installed in the horizontal position with their centerline ol waterway perpen- dicular to the back wall and parallel to the ceiling. The word "TOP" on the De- flector is to face towards the ceiling. Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap- plied to the inlet threads, hand tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler litting. Step 3. Wrench tighten the sprinkler by wrenching on the Casing with a pipe wrench whenever the casing is readily accessible. Otherwise, use a W-Type 7 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 2). The wrench recess of the W-Type 7 is to be applied to the sprinkler wrench llats (Rel. Figure 2). Step 4. Aiter the ceiling/wall has been installed/finished, slide on the outer piece of the Escutcheon until it comes in contact with the ceiling/wall. Do not lift the ceiling panel out of its normal position. ln the case of the outer piece of the Page 5 of 8 Deep Escutcheon, hold the outer piece in contact with the mounting sur- face (ceiling), and then rotate the inner piece approximately 114 turn with re- spect to the outer piece, to hold the Deep Escutcheon firmly together. Care and Maintenance The Series DS-1 Dry Type Sprinklers must be maintained and serviced in accordance with the following instruc- tions: NOTES Absence of the outer piece of an es- cutcheon, which is used to cover a clearance hole, may delay the time to sprinkler operation in a fire situation. Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that it controls, permission to shut down the affected tire protection systems must be obtained from the proper authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this action must be no- tified. A Vent Hole is provided in the Bulb Seat (Ref. Figure 1) to indicate it the Dry Sprinkler is remaining dry. Evi- dence of leakage from the Vent Hole is an indication that there may be weepage past the lnlet seal and that the sprinkler needs to be removed for determining the cause ol leakage (e.9. an improper installation or an ice plug). The fire protection system control valve must be closed and the system drained before removing the sprinkler. Sprinklers that are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated, or otherwise altered after leaving the factory. Modi- fied sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be com- pletely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or by brushing it with a solt bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid dam- age - before, during, and after instal- lation. Sprinklers damaged by drop- ping, striking, wrench twisVslippage, or the like, must be replaced. Also, replace any sprinkler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid f rom its bulb (Ref. lnstallation Section). System Type. Only wet pipe systems may be utilized. Hydraulic Design. The minimum re- quired sprinkler flow rate for systems designed to NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R are given in Table A as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage areas. The sprin- kler flow rate is the minimum required discharge from each of the total number of "design sprinklers" as specified in NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R. Forsystems designed to NFPA 13, the number of design sprinklers is to be the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers. The minimum required dis- charge from each of the four sprinklers is to be the greater of the following: r The flow rates given in Table A for NFPA 13D and 13R as a function of temperature rating and the maxi- mum allowable coverage area. . A minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/sq. ft. over the "design area" comprised of the four most hydraulically de- manding sprinklers for the actual TFP442 coverage areas being protected by the four sprinklers. Obstruction To Water Distribution. Locations of sprinklers are to be in accordance with the obstruction rules of NFPA 13 for residential sprinklers. Operational Sensitivity. The sprin- klers are to be installed relative to the ceiling mounting surface as shown in Figure 3. Sprinkler Spacing. The minimum spacing between sprinklers is 8 feet (2,4 m). The maximum spacing be- tween sprinklers cannot exceed the length of the coverage area (Ref. Ta- ble A) being hydraulically calculated (e.9., maximum 12 feet for a 12 ft. x 1 2 ft. coverage area, or 20 feet for a 20 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area). InsJaIIation The Series LFll (TY3596) must be in- stalled in accordance with the follow- ing instructions: A'OIES Damage to the fusible Link Assembly during installation can be avoided by handling the sprinkler by the support cup only (i.e., do not apply pressure to the fusible link Assembly). Replace the Protective Cap by pushing it upwards until it bottoms out against the Support Cup. The Protec- tive Cap helps prevent damage to the Deflector and Guide Pins during ceil- ing installation and/or during applica- tion of the finish coating of the ceiling. It may also be used to locate the center of the clearance hole by gently push- ing the ceiling material against the center point of the Cap. NOTE As long as the protective Cap remains in place, the system is considered to be "Out Of Seruice". Step 5. After the ceiling has been com- pleted with lhe 2-112 inch (63 mm) diameter clearance hole and in prepa- ration for installing the Cover Plate As- sembly, remove and discard the Pro- tective Cap, and verify that the Deflector moves up and down freely. lf the Sprinkler has been damaged and the Deflector does not move up and down freely, replace the entire Sprin- kler assembly. Do not attempt to mod- ify or repair a damaged sprinkler. Step 6. Screw on the Cover Plate As- sembly until its flange comes in con- tact with the ceiling. Do not continue to screw on the Cover Plate Assembly such that it lifts a ceil- ing panel out of its normal position. lf the Cover Plate Assembly cannot be engaged with the Mounting Cup or the Cover Plate Assembly cannot be en- gaged sufficiently to contact the ceil- ing, the Sprinkler Fitting must be repo- sitioned. Care and MainJenance The Series LFll (TY3596) must be maintained and serviced in accord- ance with the following instructions: NOTES Absence of a Cover Plate may delay the sprinkler operation in a fire situ- ation. Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system which it controls, permission to shut down the affected fire protection sys- tem must be obtained from the proper authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this action must be no- tified. Sprinklers which are found to be leak- ing or exhibiting visible signs of corro- sion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated, or otherwise altered after leaving the factory. Modi- fied or over heated sprinklers must be replaced. Care must be exercised to avoid dam- age - before, during, and after instal- lation. Sprinklers damaged by drop- ping, striking, wrench twisVslippage, or the like, must be replaced. The owner is responsible for the in- spection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and de- vices in compliance with this docu- ment, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protec- tion Association (e.9., NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. The in- stalling contractor or sprinkler manu- facturer should be contacted relative to any questions. NOTE The owner must assure that the sprin- klers are not used for hanging of any objects and that the sprinklers are only cleaned by means of gently dusting with a feather duster; otherwise, non- operation in the event of a fire or inad- vertent operation may result. It is recommended that automatic sprinkler systems be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified lnspection Service in accordance with local requirements and/or national codes. TABLE C, MAXIMUM WORKING PRESSURE InsJaIIaJion The Series TY-FRB Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the fol- lowing instructions: NOIES Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprinkler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6 mm) for the 135"F/57"C to 3/32 inch (2,4 mm) for the 286"F/141"C temperature ratings. A leaktight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained with a torque of 7 to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm} A maxi- mum of 21 ft. lbs. (28,5 Nm) of torque may be used to install sprinklers with 1/2 NPT connections. A leak tight 3/4 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be ob- tained with a torque of 10 to 20 tt.lbs. (13,4 to 26,8 Nm). A maximum of 30 ft.lbs. (40,7 Nm) of torque is to be used to install sprinklers with 3/4 NPT con- nections. Higher levels of torque may distort the sprinkler inlet and cause Ieakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not aftempt to make-up for insuffi- cient adjustment in the escutcheon plate by under- or over-tightening the sprinkler. Readjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. The Series TY-FRB Pendent and Up- right Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the following instruc- tions. Step 1. Pendent sprinklers are to be installed in the pendent position, and upright sprinklers are to be installed in the upright position. Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap- plied to the pipe threads, hand tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Step 3. Tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting using only the W-Type 6 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 13). With reference to Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4, the W-Type 6 Sprinkler Wrench is to be applied to the sprinkler wrench flats. The Series TY-FRB Recessed Pen- dent Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the following instruc- tions. Step A. After installing the Style 10. 20, 30, or 40 Mounting Plate, as appli- cable, over the sprinkler threads and with pipe thread sealant applied to the pipe threads, hand tighten the sprin- kler into the sprinkler fitting. Step B. Tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting using only the W-Type 7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 14). With reference to Figure 1 , 2, 3, and 4, the W-Type 7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench is to be applied to the sprinkler wrench flats. Step C. After the ceiling has been in- stalled or the finish coat has been ap- plied, slide on the Style 10, 20, 30, or 40 Closure over the Series TY-FRB Sprinkler and push the Closure over the Mounting Plate until its flange comes in contact with the ceiling. 5181114" (15,916,4 mm) FACE OF SPRINKLER FITTING 2-7t8" DtA. The owner must assure that the sprin- klers are not used for hanging of any objects; otherwise, non-operation in the event of a fire or inadvertent opera- tion may result. Absence of an escutcheon, which is used to cover a clearance hole, may delay the time to sprinkler operation in a fire situation. Sprinklers that are.found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated or otherwise altered after leaving the factory. Modi- fied sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be replaced if they cannot be completely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or Page 7 of 10 by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid dam- age to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers dam- aged by dropping, striking, wrench twisUslippage, or the like, must be re- placed. Also, replace any sprinkler that has a cracked bulb orthat has lost liquid from its bulb. (Ref. lnstallation Section). Frequent visual inspections are rec- ommended to be initially performed for corrosion resistant coated sprinklers, after the installation has been com- pleted, to verify the integrity of the cor- rosion resistant coating.
