For NFPA 73 Sprinkler Systems
General
Description
The Figure 513 (13) Riser Manifolds
described in this technical data sheet
provide the necessary waterflow
alarm, pressure gauge, alarm test ori-
fice, drain, and sight glass equipment
in a single assembly for use in NFPA
13 sprinkler systems as follows:
NFPA 13*
. 1-112lnch (DN40)
Male Thread x Female Thread
. 1-112 thru 6 lnch (DN40 thru DN150)
Groove x Groove
-Although the Riser Manifold described in
this data sheet is intended for NFPA 13
sprinkler systems, it may be used for NFPA
13D or 13R residential sprinkler systems,
where a test orifice of 5.6K (80K) is accept
able.
The variety of sizes and grooved end
connections allow cost effective and
easy transition to check valves, control
valves, and system piping. The Riser
Manifolds may be installed in eitherthe
horizontal (flow switch on top) or verti-
cal (flow going up) for both single
sprinkler rises and floor control in high
rises.
WARNING
The Riser Manifolds described herein
must be installed and maintained in
compliance with this document, as
well as with the applicable standards
of the National Fire Protection Asso-
ciation, in addition to the standards of
any other authorities having jurisdic-
tion. Failure to do so may impair the
pertormance of these devices.
The owner is responsible for maintain-
ing their fire protection system and de-
vices in proper operating condition.
The installing contractor or sprinkler
manufacturer should be contacted
with any questions.
Technical
Dala
Approvals
The Figure 513 (13) Riser Manifolds
with a cover tamper switch for the wa-
terflow alarm switch are UL Listed,
ULC Listed, and FM Approved.
The Figure 513 (13) Riser Manifolds
without a cover tamper switch for the
waterflow alarm switch are UL Listed
and FM Approved.
Maximum Working Pressure

Assembly
The manifold body of the Figure 513 is
ductile iron, whereas the manifold
body of the Figure 13 is cast iron. The
two assemblies are completely inter-
changeable in function, application,
and end-to-end laying length.
Finish
Red painted.
Installation
The Riser Manifolds may be installed
in either the horizontal (flow switch on
top) or vertical (flow going up). The
inlet of the Riser Manifold may be di-
rectly connected to a shut-off control
valve.
i/orEs
Where applicable pipe thread sealant
is to be applied sparingly. Use of a
non-hardening pipe thread sealant is
recommended.
Never remove any piping component
nor correct or modify any piping defi-
ciencies without first depressurizing
and draining the system.
Step 1. lnstall the manifold body with
the flow arrow pointing in the down-
stream position using threaded con-
nections and/or listed mechanical
grooved connections, as applicable
Step 2. Connect the drain line, and
then close the drain valve.
Step 3. Refer to Figure 3 for wiring
guidance. All wiring must be per-
formed in accordance with the Author-
ity Having Jurisdiction and/or the Na-
tional Electrical Code.
Step 4. Refer to Figure 4 for optional
relief valve.
Step 5. Place the system in service by
filling the system with water. When fill-
ing the system, partially open the con-
trol valve to slowly fill the system. Frl/-
ing the system slowly will help avoid
damaging the waterflow alarm switch.
After the system is fully pressurized,
completely open the control valve.
Step 6. Secure all supply valves
open.

dition to any specific requirements of
the NFPA, and any impairment must
be immediately corrected.
The owner is responsible for the in-
spection, testing, and maintenance of
their fire protection system and de-
vices in compliance with this docu-
ment, as well as with the applicable
standards of the National Fire Protec-
tion Association (e.9., NFPA 25), in
addition to the standards of any
authority having jurisdiction. The in-
stalling contractor or product manufac-
turer should be contacted relative to
any questions.
It is recommended that automatic
sprinkler systems be inspected,
tested, and maintained by a qualified
lnspection Service in accordance with
local requirements and/or national
codes.
,vorEs
No attempt is to be made to repair any
Riser Manifold component in the field.
Only the pressure gauge, waterflow
alarm switch, or relief valve can be
replaced. lf any other problems are
encountered the entire riser manifold
must be replaced.
The alarm/flow test procedure will re-
sult in operation of the associated
alarms. Consequently, notification
must be given to the owner and the fire
department, central station, or other
signal station to which the alarms are
connected, and notification must be
given to the building occupants.
Before closing a fire protection system
control valve for inspection or mainte-
nance work on the fire protection sys-
tem that it controls, permission to shut
down the effected fire protection sys-
tem must first be obtained from the
proper authorities and all personnel
who may be affected by this action
must be notified.
After placing a fire protection system
in seruice, notify the proper authorities
and advise those responsible for mani-
toring proprietary and/or central sta-
tion alarms.

Series TY-FRB - 2.8, 4.2, 5.6, and 8.O K-Jactor
Upright, PendenJ, and Recessed PendenJ Sprinklers
Quick Respons@, Standard Coverage
General
Description
The Series TY-FRB, 2.8, 4.2,5.6, and
8.0 K-factor, Upright and Pendent
Sprinklers described in this data sheet
are quick response - standard cover-
age, decorative 3 mm glass bulb type
spray sprinklers designed for use in
light or ordinary hazard, commercial
occupancies such as banks, hotels,
shopping malls, etc.
The recessed version of the Series
TY-FRB Pendent Sprinkler, where ap-
plicable, is intended for use in areas
with a finished ceiling. lt uses either a
two-piece Style 10 (112 inch NPT) or
Style 40 (3/4 inch NPT) Recessed Es-
cutcheon with 112 inch (12,7 mm) of
recessed adjustment or up to 3/4 inch
(19, 1 mm) of total adjustment from the
flush pendent position, or a two-piece
Style 20 (l12inch NPT) or Style 30 (3/4
inch NPT) Recessed Escutcheon with
114 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjust-
ment or up lo 112 inch (12,7 mm) of
total adjustment from the flush pen-
dent position. The adjustment pro-
vided by the Recessed Escutcheon re-
duces the accuracy to which the fixed
pipe drops to the sprinklers must be
cut.
Corrosion resistant coatings, where
applicable, are utilized to extend the
life of copper alloy sprinklers beyond
that which would otherwise be ob-
IMPORTANT
Always refer to Technical Data
Sheet TFP700 for the "INSTALLER
WARNING" that provides cautions
with respect to handling and instal-
lation of sprinkler systems and com-
ponents. lmproper handling and in-
stallation can permanently damage
a sprinkler system or its compo-
nents and cause the sprinkler to fail
to operate in a fire situation or cause
it to operate prematurely.
tained when exposed to corrosive at-
mospheres. Although corrosion resis-
tant coated sprinklers have passed the
standard corrosion tests of the appli-
cable approval agencies, the testing is
not representative of all possible cor-
rosive atmospheres. Consequently, it
is recommended that the end user be
consulted with respect to the suitability
of these coatings for any given corro-
sive environment. The effects of ambi-
ent temperature, concentration of
chemicals, and gas/chemical velocity,
should be considered, as a minimum,
along with the corrosive nature of the
chemical to which the sprinklers will be
exposed.
An intermediate level versions of the
Series TY-FRB Pendent Sprinklers
are detailed in Technical Data Sheet
TFP356, and Sprinkler Guards are de-
tailed in Technical Data SheetTFPTS0
WARNINGS
The Series TY-FRB Sprinklers de-
scribed herein must be installed and
maintained in compliance with this
document, as well as with the applica-
ble standards of the National Fire Pro-
tection Association, in addition to the
standards of any other authorities hav-
ing jurisdiction. Failure to do so may
impair the pertormance of these de-
vices.
The owner is responsible for maintain-
ing their fire protection system and de-
vices in proper operating condition.
The installing contractor or sprinkler
manufacturer should be contacted
with any questions.

The glass Bulb contains a fluid which
expands when exposed to heat. When
the rated temperature is reached, the
fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the
glass Bulb, allowing the sprinkler to
activate and water to flow.

The Series ry-FRB Sprinklers must
be installed in accordance with the fol-
lowing instructions:
,VOIES
Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if
the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of
liquid from the bulb. With the sprinkler
held horizontally, a small air bubble
should be present. The diameter of the
air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch
(1,6 mm) for the 135"F/57"C to 3/32
inch (2,4 mm) for the 286'F/141"C
temperature ratings.
A leak tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint
should be obtained with a torque of 7
to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A maxi-
mum of 21 tt. lbs. (28,5 Nm) of torque
may be used to install sprinklers with
1/2 NPT connections. A leak tight 3/4
inch NPT sprinkler joint should be ob-
tained with a torque of 10 to 20 ft.lbs.
(13,4 to 26,8 Nm). A maximum of 30
ft.lbs. (40,7 Nm) of torque is to be used
to install sprinklers with 3/4 NPT can-
nections. Higher levels of torque may
distort the sprinkler inlet and cause
leakage or impairment of the sprinkler.
Do not attempt to make-up for insuffi-
cient adjustment in the escutcheon
plate by under- or over-tightening the
sprinkler. Readjust the position of the
sprinkler fitting to suit.
The Series TY-FRB Pendent and Up-
right Sprinklers must be installed in
accordance with the following instruc-
tions.
Step 1. Pendent sprinklers are to be
installed in the pendent position, and
upright sprinklers are to be installed in
the upright position.
Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap-
plied to the pipe threads, hand tighten
the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting.
Step 3. Tighten the sprinkler into the
sprinkler fitting using only the W-Type
6 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 13).
With reference to Figures 1, 2, 3, and
4, the W-Type 6 SprinklerWrench is to
be applied to the sprinkler wrench
flats.
The Series TY-FRB Recessed Pen-
dent Sprinklers must be installed in
accordance with the following instruc-
tions.
Step A. After installing the Style 10.
20, 30, or40 Mounting Plate, as appli-
cable, over the sprinkler threads and
with pipe thread sealant applied to the
pipe threads, hand tighten the sprin-
kler into the sprinkler fitting.
Step B. Tighten the sprinkler into the
sprinkler fitting using only the W-Type
7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench (Ref.
Figure 14). With reference to Figure 1,
2, 3, and 4, the W-Type 7 Recessed
Sprinkler Wrench is to be applied to
the sprinkler wrench flats.
Step C. After the ceiling has been in-
stalled or the finish coat has been ap-
plied, slide on the Style 10, 20, 30, or
40 Closure over the Series TY-FRB
Sprinkler and push the Closure over
the Mounting Plate until its flange
comes in contact with the ceiling.

Care and
Maintenanc,e
The Series ry-FRB Sprinklers must
be maintained and serviced in accord-
ance with the following instructions:
NOTES
Before closing a fire protection system
main control valve for maintenance
work on the fire protection system that
it controls, permission to shut down the
affected fire protection system mustbe
obtained from the proper authorities
and all personnel who may be affected
by this action must be notified.
The owner musf assure that the sprin-
klers are not used for hanging of any
objects; otherwise, non-operation in
the event of a fire or inadvertent opera-
tion may result.
Absence of an escutcheon, which is
used to cover a clearance hole, may
delay the time to sprinkler operation in
a fire situation.
Sprinklers that are found to be leaking
or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion
must be replaced.
Automatic sprinklers must never be
painted, plated, coated or otherwise
altered after leaving the factory. Modi-
fied sprinklers must be replaced.
Sprinklers that have been exposed to
corrosive products of combustion, but
have not operated, should be replaced
if they cannot be completely cleaned
by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or
Page 7 of 1O
by brushing it with a soft bristle brush.
Care must be exercised to avoid dam-
age to the sprinklers - before, during,
and after installation. Sprinklers dam-
aged by dropping, striking, wrench
twisVslippage, or the like, must be re-
placed. Also, replace any sprinkler
that has a cracked bulb or that has lost
liquid from its bulb. (Ref. lnstallation
Section).
Frequent visual inspections are rec-
ommended to be initially performed for
corrosion resistant coated sprinklers,
after the installation has been com-
pleted, to verify the integrity of the cor-
rosion resistant coating. Thereafter,
annual inspections per NFPA 25
should suffice; however, instead of in-
specting from the floor level, a random

Pendent Sprinklers
4.9 K-Jactor
General
Description
The Series LFll (TY2234) Residential
Pendent Sprinklers are decorative,
fast response, frangible bulb sprin-
klers designed for use in residential
occupancies such as homes, apart-
ments, dormitories, and hotels. When
aesthetics and optimized flow charac-
teristics are the major consideration,
the Series LFll (TY2234) should be the
first choice.
The Series LFll are to be used in wet
pipe residential sprinkler systems for
one- and two-family dwellings and mo-
bile homes per NFPA 13D; wet pipe
residential sprinkler systems for resi-
dential occupancies up to and includ-
ing four stories in height per NFPA
13R; or, wet pipe sprinkler systems for
the residential portions of any occu-
pancy per NFPA 13.
The Series LFX (TY2234) has a 4.9
(70,6) K-factor that provides the re-
quired residential flow rates at reduced
pressures, enabling smaller pipe sizes
and water supply requirements.
The recessed version of the Series
LFll (TY2234) is intended for use in
areas with finished ceilings. lt employs
a two-piece Style 20 Recessed Es-
cutcheon. The Recessed Escutcheon
provides 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed
IMPORTANT
Always refer to Technical Data
Sheet TFP700 for the 'INSTALLER
WARNING' that provides cautions
with respect to handling and instal-
Iation of sprinkler systems and com-
ponents. lmproper handling and in-
stallation can permanently damage
a sprinkler system or its compo-
nents and cause the sprinkler to fail
to operate in a fire situation or cause
it to operate prematurely.
adjustment or up to l12inch (12,7 mm)
of total adjustment from the flush ceil-
ing position. The adjustment provided
by the Recessed Escutcheon reduces
the accuracy to which the pipe nipples
to the sprinklers must be cut.
The Series LFll (IY2234) has been
designed with heat sensitivity and
water distribution characteristics
proven to help in the control of residen-
tial fires and to improve the chance for
occupants to escape or be evacuated.
WARNINGS
The Series LFll (TY2234) Residential
Pendent Sprinklers described herein
must be installed and maintained in
compliance with this document, as
well as with the applicable standards
of the National Fire Protection Asso-
ciation, in addition to the standards of
any other authorities having jurisdic-
tion. Failure to do so may impair the
pertormance of these devices.
The owner is responsible for maintain-
ing their fire protection system and de-
vices in proper operating condition.
The installing contractor or sprinkler
manufacturer should be contacted
with any questions.

The glass Bulb contains a fluid that
expands when exposed to heat. When
the rated temperature is reached, the
fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the
glass Bulb allowing the sprinkler to
activate and flow water.
Design
Criteria
The Series LFll (TY2234) Residential
Pendent Sprinklers are UL and C-UL
Listed for installation in accordance
with the following criteria.
NOTE
When conditions exist that are outside
the scope of the provided criteria, refer
to the Residential Sprinkler Design
Guide TFP490 for the manufacturer's
recommendations that may be accept-
able to the local Authority having Juris-
diction.
System Type. Only wet pipe systems
may be utilized.
Hydraulic Design. The minimum re-
quired sprinkler flow rate for systems
designed to NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R
are given in Table A as a function of
temperature rating and the maximum
allowable coverage areas. The sprin-
kler flow rate is the minimum required
discharge from each of the total
number of "design sprinklers" as
specified in NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R.
For systems designed to NFPA 13, the
number of design sprinklers is to be
the four most hydraulically demanding
sprinklers. The minimum required dis-
charge from each of the four sprinklers
is to be the greater of the following:
r The flow rates given in Table A for
NFPA 13D and 13R as a function of
TFP4OO
temperature rating and the maxi-
mum allowable coverage area.
. A minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/sq.
ft. over the "design area" comprised
of the four most hydraulically de-
manding sprinklers for the actual
coverage areas being protected by
the four sprinklers.
Obstruction To Water Distribution.
Locations of sprinklers are to be in
accordance with the obstruction rules
of NFPA 13 for residential sprinklers.
Operational Sensitivity.
. For "Horizontal Ceilings" (maximum
2 inch rise for 12 inch run), the sprin-
klers are to be installed with a deflec-
tor to ceiling distance of 1-3l8 to 4
inches or in the recessed position
using only the Style 20 Recessed
Escutcheon as shown in Figure 2.
NOIES
The "Beam Ceiling Design Citeria'
section stafting on Page 4 permits de-
flector to ceiling distances up to 15-3/4
inches.
So as to help avoid obstructions to
water distribution, a maximum 12 inch
deflector-to-ceiling distance is permit-
ted for NFPA 13D and NFPA 13R appli-
cations where the sprinklers are located
in closets.
. For "Sloped Ceilings" (greater than
2 inch rise up to 8 inch rise foll2
inch run), the sprinklers are to be
installed with a deflector to ceiling

(a) For coverage area dimensions less than or between those indicated, it is necessary to use the minimum required flow for the next
highest coverage area for which hydraulic design criteria are stated.
(b) Requirement is based on minimum flow in GPM (LPM) from each sprinkler. The associated residual pressures are calculated
using the nominal K-factor. Refer to Hydraulic Design Criteria Section for details.

Beam Ceiling
Design Criteria
The Series LFll (TY2234) Residential
Pendent Sprinklers are UL and C-UL
Listed for installation in residential oc-
cupancies with horizontal ceilings (i.e.,
slopes up to a 2 inch rise over a 12 inch
run) with beams when installed in ac-
cordance with the following criteria:
General Information. The basic con-
cept of this protection scheme is to
locate the sprinklers on the underside
of the beams, Ref. Figure 5, (not in the
beam pockets); to identify the main
beams that principally run in one direc-
tion as "primary beams"; and, to iden-
tify the beams that run principally per-
pendicular to the main beams, as may
be present (or in some cases may be
necessary for proper sprinkler protec-
tion), as "secondary beams".
Primary and Secondary Beam
Types. Solid surface, solid or hollow
core, combustible or non-combustible.
Primary and Secondary Beam Posi-
tioning. Directly attached to the un-
derside of a combustible or non-com-
bustible smooth ceiling at any
elevation.
Primary Beam Gross-Section: Maxi-
mum depth of 14 inches and the maxi-
mum width is unlimited. The cross-
sectional shape of the primary beam
may be rectangular to circular.
Secondary Beam Cross-Section.
Maximum depth to be no greater than
the primary beam and the maximum
width is unlimited. The cross-sectional
shape of the secondary beam may be
rectangular to circu lar.
Primary Beam Spacing. The primary
beams (Fig. 64) are to be 3 ft. - 4 in. to
6 ft. from the compartment wall to cen-
ter ofthe nearest beam and from cen-
ter to center between beams.
Secondary Beam Spacing. The sec-
ondary beams principally run perpen-
dicular to the primary beams.
Secondary beams of a depth equal to
the primary beam must be placed so
that the beam pockets created by the
primary beams do not exceed 20 feet
in length (Fig. 6B).
NOTE
When the beam pockets created by
the primary beams exceed 20 feet in
length, the installation will require the
use of secondary beams as described
above. Otherwise, secondary beams
need not be present.
Secondary beams of a cross-sectional
depth greater than one-quarter the
depth of the primary beams are to be
a minimum of 3 ft. - 4 in. from the
compartment wall to center of the
nearest beam and from center to cen-
ter between beams (Fig. 6C).
Secondary beams of a cross-sectional
depth no greater than one-quarter the
depth of the primary beams may be
placed at any compartment wall to
center of the nearest beam distance
and from any center to center distance
between beams (Fig. 6C).
Lintels. Lintels over doorways exiting
the compartment must be present. The
minimum height for the lintels is 8
inches or no less than the depth ofthe
Primary Beams, whichever is greater.
Sprinkler Types. Series LFll
(TY2234), 155F and 175F, Pendent
and Recessed Pendent Residential
Sprinklers.
Sprinkler Goverage Area and Hy-
draulic Design. The sprinkler cover-
age areas and hydraulic design criteria
as presented in the Table A for "Hori-
zontal Ceilings" are to be applied.
Sprinkler Position. The deflector to
bottom of primary beams for the Series
LFX (TY2234) Pendent Sprinklers or
Series LFll (TY2234) Recessed Pen-
dent Sprinklers is to be 1-114 to 1-314
inches (Fig. 5A). The vertical center-
line of the Series LFll IY2234) Pen-
dent Sprinklers is to be no greater than
half the primary beam cross-sectional
width plus 2 inches from the centerline
of the primary beam (Fig 58).
NOIES
Core drilling of beams to allow the in-
stallation of sprinkler drops requires
consulting with a structural engineer.
Where core drilling is not permitted,
the previously stated sprinkler position
criteria for the Series LFll (TY2234)
Pendent Sprinklers allows for the
sprinkler drop to be placed adjacent to
the primary beam.
Beam and Soffit Arrangements. A
soffit is permitted to be placed around
the perimeter of a compartment with
the beam arrangement within the sof-
fited area (Fig.7).
The cross-section of the soffit may be
any size as long as it does not create
an obstruction to water distribution per
the obstruction rules of NFPA 13 for
residential sprinklers.
When soffits are present, the pre-
viously provided 3 ft. - 4 in. to 6 ft.
"compartment wall to adjacent beam"
distance for the primary and secon-
dary beams is to be measured from the
face of the soffit as opposed to the
compartment wall.
TFP4OO
NOTE
Although the distance to the beams is
measured from the face of the soffit,
the sprinkler coverage area is to be
measured from the compartment wall.

Installation
The Series LFll (IY2234) must be in-
stalled in accordance with the follow-
ing instructions:
NOIES
Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if
the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of
liquid from the bulb, With the sprinkler
held horizontally, a small air bubble
should be present. The diameter of the
air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch
(1,6 mm).
A leak tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint
should be obtained with a torque of 7
to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A maxi-
mum of 21 ft.lbs. (28,5 Nm) of torque
is to be used to install sprinklers.
Higher levels of torque may distort the
sprinkler inlet with consequent leak-
age or impairment of the sprinkler.
Do not attempt to compensate for in-
sufficient adjustment in an Escutcheon
Plate by under- or over-tightening the
Sprinkler. Readjust the position of the
sprinkler fitting to suit.
The Series LFll Pendent Sprinklers
must be installed in accordance with
the following instructions.
Step l. Pendent sprinklers are to be
installed in the pendent position with
the deflector parallel to the ceiling.
Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap-
plied to the pipe threads, hand tighten
the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting.
Step 3. Tighten the sprinkler into the
sprinkler fitting using only the W-Type
6 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 3).
With reference to Figure 1 , the W-Type
6 Sprinkler Wrench is to be applied to
the wrench flats.
The Series LFll Recessed Pendent
Sprinklers must be installed in ac-
cordance with the following instruc-
tions.
Step A. Recessed pendent sprinklers
are to be installed in the pendent posi-
tion with the deflector parallel to the
ceiling.
Step B. After installing the Style 20
Mounting Plate over the sprinkler
threads and with pipe thread sealant
applied to the pipe threads, hand
tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler
fitting.
Step C. Tighten the sprinkler into the
sprinkler fitting using only the W-Type
7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench (Ref.
Figure 4). With reference to Figure 1,
the W-Type 7 Recessed Sprinkler
Wrench is to be applied to the sprinkler
wrench flats.
Step D. After the ceiling has been in-
stalled or the finish coat has been ap-
plied, slide on the Style 20 Closure
over the Series LFll Sprinkler and
push the Closure over the Mounting
Plate until its flange comes in contact
with the ceiling.
TFP4OO
Care and
Maintenance
The Series LFll (TY2234) must be
maintained and serviced in accord-
ance with the following instructions:
wOIES
Absence of an Escutcheon Plate may
delay the sprinkler operation in a fire
situation.
Before closing a fire protection system
main control valve for maintenance
work on the fire protection system
which it controls, permission to shut
down the affected fire protection sys-
tem must be obtained from the proper
authorities and all personnel who may
be affected by this action must be no-
tified.
Sprinklers which are found to be leak-
ing or exhibiting visible signs of corro-
sion must be replaced.
Automatic sprinklers must never be
painted, plated, coated, or otherwise
altered after leaving the factory. Modi-
fied sprinklers must be replaced.
Sprinklers that have been exposed to
corrosive products of combustion, but
have not operated, should be replaced
if they cannot be completely cleaned
by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or
by brushing it with a soft bristle brush.
Care must be exercised to avoid dam-
TFP4OO
age to the sprinklers - before, during,
and after installation. Sprinklers dam-
aged by dropping, striking, wrench
twisVslippage, or the like, must be re-
placed. Also, replace any sprinklerthat
has a cracked bulb or that has lost
liquid from its bulb. (Ref. lnstallation
Section).
The owner is responsible for the in-
spection, testing, and maintenance of
their fire protection system and de-
vices in compliance with this docu-
ment, as well as with the applicable
standards of the National Fire Protec-
tion Association (e.9., NFPA 25), in
addition to the standards of any other
authorities having jurisdiction. The in-
stalling contractor or sprinkler manu-
facturer should be contacted relative
to any questions.
NOTE
The owner must assure that the sprin-
klers are not used for hanging of any
objects and that the sprinklers are only
cleaned by means of gently dusting
with a feather duster; otherwise, non-
operation in the event of a fire or inad-
veftent operation may result.
It is recommended that automatic
sprinkler systems be inspected,
tested, and maintained by a qualified
lnspection Service in accordance with
local requirements and/or national
codes.

Operation
When the Series DS-'l is in service,
water is prevented from entering the
assembly by the Plug & Belleville Seal-
ing Assembly (Ref. Figure 1) in the
lnlet ol the Sprinkler. The glass Bulb
contains a fluid that expands when ex-
posed to heat. When the rated tem-
perature is reached, the lluid expands
sulficiently to shatter the glass Bulb,
and the Bulb Seat is released. The
compressed Spring is then able to ex-
pand and push the Water Tube as well
as the Guide Tube outward. This action
simultaneously pulls inward on the
Yoke, withdrawing the Plug & Belleville
Seal from the lnlet allowing the sprin-
kler to activate and flow water.
Design
Criteria
The Series DS-1 Sprinklers are in-
tended lor use in fire sprinkler systems
designed in accordance with the
standard installation rules recognized
by the applicable Listing or Approval
agency (e.9., UL Listing is based on
NFPA 13 requirements).
The Series DS-'l Dry Type Sprinkler is
to be installed in the 1 inch NPT outlet
or run of malleable or ductile iron
threaded tee fittings that meet the di-
mensional requirements of ANSI
816.3 (Class 150) or cast iron
threaded tee fittings that meet the di-
mensional requirements of ANSI
816.4 (Class 125) with the end sprin-
kler fitting on a branch line to be
plugged as shown in Figures 3 - 11.
When installing 1 inch NPT Series
DS-1 Dry Type Sprinklers on a dry pipe
sprinkler system, only use the side
outlet of maximum 2-112 inch size re-
ducing tee's.
For wet pipe sprinkler systems, the
Series DS-1 Dry Type Sprinklers may
also be installed in the 1 inch NPT
outlet of a Central Figure 730 Me-
chanical Tee or the following Tyco Fire
Products CPVC fittings: (P/N 80145)
1" x 1" NPT Female Adapter or (P/N
BO249l1'' x 1" x 1" NPT Sprinkler Head
Adapter Tee.
NOTE
Do not install the Series DS-l into any
other type fitting without first consult-
ing the Technical Services Depart-
ment. Failure to use the appropriate
fitting may result in: failure of the sprin-
kler to properly operate due to forma-
tion of ice over the inlet Plug or binding
of the inlet Plug; or, insufficient en-

gagement of the inlet pipe threads with
consequent leakage.
Branch, cross, and feedmain piping
connected to Dry Sprinklers and sub-
ject to freezing temperatures must be
pitched lor drainage in accordance
with the minimum requirements of the
National Fire Protection Association
for dry pipe sprinkler systems.
When Dry Sprinklers are to be used in
wet pipe sprinkler systems protecting
areas subject to lreezing temperatures
(e.9., sprinkler drops into freezers),
consideration must be given to the ap-
propriate length ol the sprinkler that
will prevent freezing of the water in the
connecting pipes due to conduction.
When the temperature surrounding
the wet pipe sprinkler system is main-
tained at a minimum temperature ol
40"F14"C, the following are the mini-
mum recommended lengths between
the face ol the sprinkler fitting and the
outside surlace ol the protected area
(i.e., length exposed to minimum am-
bient of 4O"F/4'C):
r 12 inches (300 mm) when the tem-
perature within the protected area
is -20"F129"C
. 18 inches (450 mm) when the tem-
perature within the protected area
is -40'F/-40'C
. 24 inches (600 mm) when the tem-
perature within the protected area
is -60'F/-51 "C
For protected area temperatures be-
tween those given above, the minimum
recommended length from the face of
the fitting to the outside of the pro-
tected area may be determined by in-
terpolating between the indicated val-
ues.
NOTE
When Dry Sprinklers penetrate a ceil-
ing or wall into an area subject to freez-
ing, the clearance space around the
Sprinkler Casing must be completely
sealed in order to prevent the leakage
of moist air into the freezing area
which might result in the formation of
condensate around the Frame, Deflec-
tor, Bulb Seat, or Bulb. Failure to pre-
vent the formation of condensate could
result in the build-up of ice around the
releasing components. This could re-
sult an inadvertent operation of the
sprinkler or impaired operation due ta
red uced th e rm al s e ns itiv ity.
Installation
The Series DS-1 Dry Type Sprinklers
must be installed in accordance with
the following instructions:
ruorEs
The Series DS-l must only be installed
in fittings that meet the requirements
of the Design Criteria section.
Refer to the Design Criteria sectian for
other important requirements regard-
ing piping design and sealing of the
clearance space around the Sprinkler
Casing.
Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if
the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of
liquid from the bulb. With the sprinkler
held horizontally, a small air bubble
shauld be present. The diameter of the
air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch
(1,6 mm) for the 135"F/57"C rating to
1/8 inch (3,2 mm) for the 286"F/141'C
rating.
A leak tight 1 inch NPT sprinkler joint
should be obtained with a torque of 20
to 30 ft.lbs. (26,8 to 40,2 Nm). Higher
levels of torque may distort the sprin-
kler inlet with consequent leakage or
impairment of the sprinkler.
Do not attempt to compensate for in-
sufficient adjustment in an Escutcheon
Plate by under- or over-tightening the
Sprinkler. Readjust the position of the
sprinkler fitting to suit.
Step 1. Pendent sprinklers must be
installed only in the pendent position,
and upright sprinklers must be in-
stalled only in the upright position. The
deflector of a pendent or upright sprin-
kler is to be parallel to the ceiling.
Horizontal sidewall sprinklers are to be
installed in the horizontal position with
their centerline ol waterway perpen-
dicular to the back wall and parallel to
the ceiling. The word "TOP" on the De-
flector is to face towards the ceiling.
Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap-
plied to the inlet threads, hand tighten
the sprinkler into the sprinkler litting.
Step 3. Wrench tighten the sprinkler by
wrenching on the Casing with a pipe
wrench whenever the casing is readily
accessible. Otherwise, use a W-Type 7
Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 2). The
wrench recess of the W-Type 7 is to be
applied to the sprinkler wrench llats
(Rel. Figure 2).
Step 4. Alter the ceiling/wall has been
installed/finished, slide on the outer
piece of the Escutcheon until it comes
in contact with the ceiling/wall. Do not
lift the ceiling panel out of its normal
position.
ln the case of the outer piece of the
Deep Escutcheon, hold the outer
piece in contact with the mounting sur-
face (ceiling), and then rotate the inner
piece approximately 1/4 turn with re-
spect to the outer piece, to hold the
Deep Escutcheon lirmly together.
Care and
Maintenance
The Series DS-1 Dry Type Sprinklers
must be maintained and serviced in
accordance with the following instruc-
tions:
NOTES
Absence of the outer piece af an es-
cutcheon, which is used to cover a
clearance hole, may delay the time to
sprinkler operation in a fire situation.
Before closing a fire protection system
main control valve for maintenance
work on the fire protection system that
it controls, permission to shut down
the affected fire protection systems
must be obtained from the proper
authorities and all personnel who may
be affected by this action must be no-
tified.
A Vent Hole is provided in the Bulb
Seat (Ref. Figure 1) to indicate if the
Dry Sprinkler is remaining dry. Evi-
dence of leakage from the Vent Hole
is an indication that there may be
weepage past the lnlet seal and that
the sprinkler needs to be removed for
determining the cause of leakage (e.9.
an improper installation or an ice plug).
The fire protection system control
valve must be closed and the system
drained before removing the sprinkler.
Sprinklers that are found to be leaking
or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion
must be replaced.
Automatic sprinklers must never be
painted, plated, coated, or otherwise
altered after leaving the factory. Modi-
fied sprinklers must be replaced.
Sprinklers that have been exposed to
corrosive products of combustion, but
have not operated, should be com-
pletely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler
with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft
bristle brush.
Care must be exercised to avoid dam-
age - before, during, and after instal-
lation. Sprinklers damaged by drop-
ping, striking, wrench twisUslippage,
or the like, must be replaced. Also,
replace any sprinkler that has a
cracked bulb or that has lost liquid lrom
its bulb (Ref. lnstallation Section).

ment, as well as with the applicable
standards of the National Fire Protec-
tion Association (e.9., NFPA 25), in
addition to the standards of any other
authorities having jurisdiction. The in-
stalling contractor or sprinkler manu-
facturer should be contacted relative to
any questions.
It is recommended that automatic
sprinkler systems be inspected,
tested, and maintained by a qualilied
lnspection Service in accordance with
local requirements andlor national
codes.
