You have proposed two small revisions to the approved foundation details for that new home: • Replacing the Simpson SSTB 1" and 7/8" anchor bolts with threaded rods that have doubled nutted washers to resist withdrawal. So long as this is done per the Simpson catalog specifications, this will be entirely adequate to resist the uplift. • Replacing the #5 bars with #4 bars in the footings and stem walls. This original rebar size was your suggestion, not my specification. You may downsize these bars to the more standard #4, and still meet the structural requirements. Both these minor changes to your foundation are entirely acceptable to me and I herein approve them. Please do not hesitate to reach me, with any questions that you may have, concerning this matter. Proposed designs which cannot meet the specific requirements of a listed option above may calculate compliance by Chapters 4 or 5 of this Code. 2. Requirement applies to all ceilings except single rafter or joist vaulted ceilings complying with note 3. 'Adv' denotes Advanced Framed Ceiling. 3. Log and solid timber walls with a minimum average thickness of 3.5" are exempt from this insulation requirement. Before hiring If you are a consumer interested in having work done by a contractor, this brochure can help you by: • Explaining how the Washington state contractor registration program works. • Describing how the contractor registration law protects consumers. Outlining the requirements for contractors. Washington state law requires all contractors to be registered. General contractors must maintain a $6,000 bond and specialty contractors must maintain a $4,000 bond. (Specialty contractors are those who participate in no more than two trades and do not subcontract work to other contractors.) It is against state law for any contractor to submit bids or perform any contracting work without being registered with the Department of Labor and Industries. It also is illegal for contractors to advertise without including their 12-character contractor registration number in the advertisement. The contractor registration law exists to protect consumers from incompetent and/or fraudulent contractors. Requiring contractors to be bonded gives consumers some financial protection against unsatisfactory or incomplete work. Dissatisfied consumers may take civil action to obtain restitution by taking action against a contractor's bond in Superior Court. The law also requires contractors to carry insurance for property damage and public liability. It also ensures that contractors have a current Unified Business Identifier (UBI) Account Number and Federal Employer Account Number. Any correspondence you send to a contractor should clearly state that; lids will not be accepted unless the contractor provides s a valid register Lion number. While the law does not guarantee perfect „ performance, it improves'the likelihood that the contractor does competent work. A maximum $3,000 fine and a misde- meanor infraction can be levied against any con- tractor who performs work or submits a bid with- out being registered with Labor and Industries. aT rod City of Port ToA nd Development Services Department 250 Madison Street, Suite 3, Port Townsend, WA 98368 (360)379-5095 LANDAU CHARDS 85 MARTIN RD PORT TOWNSE D WA 98368-9768 Application No MP08-117 Project: UTIIRES HOOK-UP Application Type Minor Improvement Pemit Parcel# 948002317 Subdivision: Block/Lot Site Address: SHERMAN Invoice Date: I _03-DECmN Invoice # 575 Description Fee Amount Paid/Credh Balance Due SDC - Water $2522.00 $0.00 $2522 00 SDP Inspection $90.00 $0.00 $90.00 SDC - Sewer Water $2331.00 $0.00 $2331.00 ' Connection Technology Fee for Minor Improvement Penytt $135.00 $5.00 $0.00 $0.00 $135.00 $5.00 u r Record Retention Fee for Minor $5.00 $0.00 $5.00 w„ Improvement Pernit ° Minor Improvement Permit $100.00 $0.00 $100.00 Total Fee Amount: $5188.00 Total Paid/Credits: $0.00 Balance Due: $5188.00." April 15, 2009 Charles Landau 85 Martin Road Port Townsend, WA 98368 rye, Re: Confirination of your proposed deck framing Dear Charles, I am the engineer -of -record for your proposed home on Sherman Street. You and I have worked on fine homes with each other for at least thirty years. This protnises to be one of our finest examples — even if the client has been typically insistent on tweaking the design, in an unending quest for perfection. I understand that the building department has questioned your use of Port Orford Cedar as structural decking on the four foot porch along the south side of die home. I must concede that this framing is simpler than the more typical deck framing. You are proposing to use full-size 2x10's as planks. Even with a heavier deck loading, these planks do remarkably well. Port Orford Cedar is an unusually stiff and strong "softwood," and will be a joy under your feet. I stand behind the Port Orford Cedar heavy planking, as shown on A-6 of your submittal set of drawings. I am enclosing stamped copies of my shear wall specifications, as transcribed by you into a more legible form. Please do not hesitate to call me with any further questions that you may have. Yours, Ittataea,tl.L "lira." Enclosure Page I 1 iq,,r, Aber, Ph.D., P.E. 60 Valley Street Unit One Providence, R1 02909 . ... ... .
