Revisions require 2 sets of plans and a written scope of workthat fully describes the proposed change plus any
additional information that will be of assistance in issuing your revision. If your plans were stamped by a design
professional, all revision submittals require a stamp with a wet signature. Be aware that changes to the existing
approved plans may also require Lou to revise your original building permit application (lot coverage, impervious
surface, structure square footage, etc.) and energy code documents (changing windows, heat source, etc.) to
conform to your proposed changes.

Re: Revisions to Foundation Details on your new home
Dear Charles,
I am the engineer of record for your new home. You have proposed two small revisions
to the approved foundation details for that new home:
• Replacing the Simpson SSTB 1" and 7/8" anchor bolts with threaded rods that
have doubled nutted washers to resist withdrawal. So long as this is done per the
Simpson catalog specifications, this will be entirely adequate to resist the uplift.
• Replacing the #5 bars with #4 bars in the footings and stem walls. This original
rebar size was your suggestion, not my specification. You may downsize these
bars to the more standard #4, and still meet the structural requirements.
Both these minor changes to your foundation are entirely acceptable to me and I herein
approve them. Please do not hesitate to reach me, with any questions that you may have,
concerning this matter.
Yours truly,
E.

Rick,
That will be fine. At this time I am only interested in getting the
foundation for the garage approved. In that way I can get you engineered
drawings for all the changes at once. Thanks. When the permit is
approved please call Hans Vodder at 732-4065 and let him know he can
pick up the permit. He has a check that I gave him.
Thanks, Charles

Reference Case ,
0. Nominal R-values are for wood frame assemblies only or assemblies built in accordance with Section 601.1.
1. Minimum requirements for each option listed_ For example, if a proposed design has a glazing ratio to the conditioned floor
area of 13%, it shall comply with all of the requirements of the 15% glazing option (or higher). Proposed designs which cannot
meet the specific requirements of a listed option above may calculate compliance by Chapters 4 or 5 of this Code.
2. Requirement applies to all ceilings except single rafter or joist vaulted ceilings complying with note 3. 'Adv' denotes
Advanced Framed Ceiling.
3. Requirement applicable only to single rafter or joist vaulted ceilings where both (a) the distance between the lop of the
ceiling and the underside of the roof sheathing is less than 12 inches and (b) there is a minimum I -inch vented airspace above the
insulation- Other single rafter or joist vaulted ceilings shall comply with the "ceiling" requirements. This option is limited to 500
square feet of ceiling area for any one dwelling unit.
4. Below grade walls shall be insulated either on the exterior to a minimum level ofR-10, or on the interior to the same level as
walls above grade. Exterior insulation installed on below grade walls shall be a water resistant material, manufactured for its
intended use, and installed according to the manufacturer's specifications. See Section 602.2.
5. Floors over crawl spaces or exposed to ambient air conditions.
6. Required slab perimeter insulation shall be a water resistant material, manufactured for its intended use, and installed
according to manufacturer's specifications_ See Section 602.4.
7. Int. denotes standard framing 16 inches on center with headers insulated with a minimum of R-10 insulation.
8. This wall insulation requirement denotes R-19 wall cavity insulation plus R-5 foam sheathing.
9. Doors, including all fire doors, shall be assigned default U-factors from Table 10-6C.
10. Where a maximum glazing area is listed, the total glazing area (combined vertical plus overhead) as a percent of gross
conditioned floor area shall be less than or equal to that. value. Overhead glazing with U-factor of U-0.40 or less is not included
in glazing area limitations:
11. Overhead glazing shall have U-factors determined in accordance with NFRC 100 or as specified in Section 502.1.5,
12. Log and solid timber walls with a minimum average thickness of 3.5" are exempt from this insulation requirement.
Before hiring
If you are a consumer interested in having work done by a contractor, this brochure can help
you by:
• Explaining how the Washington state contractor registration program works.
• Describing how the contractor registration law protects consumers.
Outlining the requirements for contractors.
Washington state law requires all contractors
to be registered. General contractors must
maintain a $6,000 bond and specialty
contractors must maintain a $4,000 bond.
(Specialty contractors are those who participate
in no more than two trades and do not
subcontract work to other contractors.)
It is against state law for any contractor to
submit bids or perform any contracting work
without being registered with the Department
of Labor and Industries. It also is illegal for
contractors to advertise without including their
12-character contractor registration number in
the advertisement.
The contractor registration law exists to
protect consumers from incompetent and/or
fraudulent contractors.
Requiring contractors to be bonded gives
consumers some financial protection against
unsatisfactory or incomplete work. Dissatisfied
consumers may take civil action to obtain
restitution by taking action against a contractor's
bond in Superior Court.
The law also requires contractors to carry
insurance for property damage and public
liability. It also ensures that contractors have a
current Unified Business Identifier (UBI)
Account Number and Federal Employer
Account Number.
Any correspondence you send to a contractor
should clearly state that; lids will not be accepted
unless the contractor provides s a valid register Lion
number.
While the law does not guarantee perfect „
performance, it improves'the likelihood that
the contractor does competent work.
A maximum $3,000 fine and a misde-
meanor infraction can be levied against any con-
tractor who performs work or submits a bid with-
out being registered with Labor and Industries.

Charles Landau
85 Martin Road
Port Townsend, WA 98368
rye,
Re: Confirination of your proposed deck framing
Dear Charles,
I am the engineer -of -record for your proposed home on Sherman Street. You and I have worked on
fine homes with each other for at least thirty years. This protnises to be one of our finest examples —
even if the client has been typically insistent on tweaking the design, in an unending quest for perfection.
I understand that the building department has questioned your use of Port Orford Cedar as structural
decking on the four foot porch along the south side of die home. I must concede that this framing is
simpler than the more typical deck framing. You are proposing to use full-size 2x10's as planks. Even
with a heavier deck loading, these planks do remarkably well. Port Orford Cedar is an unusually stiff
and strong "softwood," and will be a joy under your feet.
I stand behind the Port Orford Cedar heavy planking, as shown on A-6 of your submittal set of
drawings. I am enclosing stamped copies of my shear wall specifications, as transcribed by you into a
more legible form.
Please do not hesitate to call me with any further questions that you may have.
Yours,
Ittataea,tl.L "lira."
