Standard design and construction methods have several advantages: - Eliminates the need for a new drawing for each project - Provides ramp design that meets the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG), the local county building codes and the Uniform Building Code (UBC) strength requirements. "y - Ramps can be built faster and easier by use of standard methods. - Efficiency is improved by essentially building the same ramp each time. RAMP FEATURES Robust Design - Simple construction - Standard material - Basic tools - Adaptable to most sites - Flexible" Low cost One day completion Good utilization of team members SITE SURVEY It is always necessary to visit the construction site to determine the ramp requirements. ALWAYS CONSULT WITH THE CLIENT AT THIS STAGE SO THAT THE DESIGN MEETS WITH THEIR APPROVAL. Total Rise IL 6 Total rise is the distance between the top of the lower landing surface (usually the ground) and the entry door sill. This measurement determines " the total length of the ramp, once the slope is selected. L OLYMPIC PENINSULA BLUEBILLS Slope Slope is the ratio of the vertical rise/horizontal run. The desired ratio is 1/12. E.G. for every inch of rise there should be 12 inches of run. As an example if the total rise is 24 inches a ramp 24 feet long is the design goal. Note that the ramp can be divided into upper and lower sections and these ramp sections can be different lengths. Jefferson County allows a ramp with as small a slope as 1/8. This is allowed when space prohibits a longer ramp. NOTE: A straight run of over 30 feet is not normally allowed unless there is a flat landing area so the person can rest before continuing the trip. Ramp Layout The ramp length and the conditions of the ramp site determine the layout. Le. Straight, L-shaped (90 degree turn) or switch -back (180 degree turn). Lower Landing Requirements Determine the best method of transitioning from the ramp end to the ground. If a concrete pad is required determine the size. Develop the Material List Once the site survey is done you should have enough information to develop a list of material. IL 7 OLYMP'IC PENINSULA BLUEBILLS ' MATERIAL LIST GUIDELINES The following information can be used to develop the material list: Pressure Treated (PT) wood is used for all 2x6, 2x4 and 4x4 lumber: Note: For joists and railings order the 2x6 and 2x4 lumber in the longest lengths feasible. On long ramps posts are installed at 8 foot intervals so try not to order 12 foot lengths as the joint falls in the center of the supports. PLYWOOD Three quarter inch CDX for all but the sheet that is at the ramp end. Code requires using Pressure Treated % plywood here as it is next to the ground. RAMP COVERING Roll roofing (83 Ib). This comes in 3 foot wide by 33 feet long. NAILS 16d (penny) galvanized for nailing 2 inch material. Order one pound per 8 feet of ramp. 7d galvanized for nailing plywood down. Order 1 lb per 16 feet of ramp. 1-1/4 inch galvanized roofing nails. One pound per 16 feet of ramp. CONCRETE For post holes: (If required) Order one 601b bag of redi-mix for every two post holes For lower landing. (If required) Order one 60 pound bag of redi-mix per 2 sq feet of landing. (pad is 2inches thick). HAND RAILS (If required) Railing- 1-5/8 round (with flattened bottom) handrail 1-1/2 inch plastic stand-offs (local manufacture) Primeguard Exterior screws. 4 inches long IL 8 )a'1D OLYMPIC PENINSULA BL UEBILLS These instructions are intended to be used as guidelines for ramp construction. Details vary due to location and surroundings and the length. 1. Building Permit: Need depends on location. Usually none needed in Jefferson and Kitsap Counties. Required some places in Clallam County. Obtained by agency if needed. 2. Ramp slope: Minimum is 8 feet of length for each foot of rise (8/1). Desired is 12 feet of length per foot of rise (1211). 3. Width: Desired is 42-48 inches. Minimum is 36 inches. 4. Entry door landing. Desired is 5ft x 5 ft. Four feet by four feet is common. 5. Construction Notes (See Drawing) - Support posts: 4x4 PT in12-16 inch hole. Use concrete if required. - Framing and joists: 2x6 PT lumber. Joists 16" o/c or less. - Flooring: % inch CDX. End piece % PT plywood. - Anti-skid floor covering: Roll roofing - Railing: Top rail 2x6 flat, 2x4 vertical. Mid rail, 4z4 - Hand rail (if regd)1-5/8 inch round railing Nailing schedule: 2 inch lumber: 16d box Plywood flooring: 7d box, 7" to 9" o/c. Roll roofing: 1-1/4 roofing nails, 6"-8" o/c. Changes between % inch and % inch can be handled by installing a beveled board or similar device, having a slope no greater then 1 to 2 (see sketch). A change in level greater then % inch should have a ramped approach with a slope about the same as that for a ramp (12/1).
